My first love is aircraft but followed very closely by ships or any sort but preferably ships from the '30s onwards.  Got Dragon's 1/350 Kidd and Buchanan for Christmas so I, happily, have some ship building in the future.

I could quite easily build just ships as well but am still working back into the hobby so all in good time. Smile

Welcome to the dark side *evil grin* Just kidding. If you really want to compound the insanity, try a ship diorama in 1/700 Devil.

Yes to this. I'm working on using MINIFIGS  and the Revell figures to create a diorama on the deck of my Revell 1/96 Alabama. There is a wide variety of these confederate figures althought they do scale out a little small at around 5' tall.  Paul

How does this work?

Try your hands on a sailing vessel. Done properly it is a work of art on that shelf, needing no embellishment at all Wink

why I stopped modeling aircraft and went to ships

Just thought I'd share a somewhat recent revelation I had concerning modeling ships apposed to aircraft. Recently, for what I thought was going to be just a one time deal, I picked up a ship from the local hobby shop (Dragon's H.M.S. Invincible) after spending less than 10 minutes looking over the thing I suddenly saw a ship as a mini diorama within itself. Aircraft just never looked right to me sitting on a shelf alone. I always had to put them in some frame of reference, I don't feel as much of a need to do this with ships - of course I will eventually try my hand at water modeling but even so, for your money, there just seems to be more possibilities. And furthermore - they just look right on a shelf --- those darn aircraft just don't represent as well! anyway I think I will try this ship modeling thing for longer than expected!
