Academy Ike CVN-69

Howdy folks, I got Academy's Eisenhower in 1/800 scale for Christmas. The parts are very nice, flash free and sinkhole free, with finely raised deck and hull detail lines. The decal sheet includes hull number for the deck and island, along with the main runway stripes, but the rest of the deck markings you have to paint yourself.

She is represented in her late-'70s configuration- i.e. SPS-43 radar, CVW-7 which includes F-4s, F-14s, A5s, A6s, A7s, etc.....

What do you all think of Academy's kits?

I will prefer Trumpeter 1/700 Nimitz class CVN. Although it is much more expensive. U will get water line series or hull series option. Come with water line series base with wave moulding.

A huge extensive of detail assesories of fighter jet, helo and tug truck, crane with good decal. Some photo etch for mast. Well worth money spend for this set.

I bought it in 2008 year end sale for USD45 bucks.

Thanks Harshman, I haven't  forayed into Trumpeter offerings too much, the only one I have is the Wisconsin circa 1991 they did with Pit Road, and the 1/500 Nimitz kit which I was dissapointed in, so I traded it in for different kits.

The ship itself with detailing and a little scratchbild detail wouldn't be to bad, but the aircraft complement curled my toenails up.Dead I will keep your recomendation of Trumpeter's 1/700  in mind though if I go to buy another Nimitz class kit. I also have Revell Germany / Italeri 1/720 scale Ronald Reagan. Scale doesn't bother me, as I have all scales from 1/350 down to 1/1200.

I would like to see some PE available in 1/800 though. I think she'll build up ok as a shelf model though.

You are correct, the Trump 1:500 scale Nimitz is an older model.    It comes from a time when Trump was just getting into the model business, before they settled into the standard 1:350/1:700 scale scheme.    It is cruder than their models of the current vintage.

Addiitonally, there is not much aftermarket support for the 1:500 scale.   You may, however, cobble together some details from individual PE sets.

It is hard to assess what is worth the money.    It depends on your personal situation.   If you buy one for some amount and get an even or greater amount of personal modeling enjoyment - then it may be worth it.     If you buy one for the same amount and get less value in enjoyment and/or struggle bringing the kit to your personal standards then is it worth it?

Totally not worth it! Despite being bigger scale than its 1/700 kit. Its detail is much worse.

If u want to build good USS CVN scale model. There are only 2 brand to choose. Trumpeter for both its 1/700 and 1/350. Or Tamiya 1/350 Enterprise.
