Regarding the USS Utah (BB-31/AG-16)
Posted by uproar on Sunday, January 10, 2010 11:44 AM

 Greetings!

I wondered if anyone out there knew of any available model kits of the USS Utah, the target ship capsized and sunk during the Pearl Harbor attack.  My late father was a survivor of that ship, and I would love to build a model, but unfortunately it has never seemed to have received as much attention as the Arizona, Oklahoma, and other ships that were attacked...which is really a shame.  I would appreciate any information anyone might have.  Also, there is a video out there, "Pearl Harbor Revisited:  USS Arizona & USS Utah", that is also nearly impossible to find, and that I would love to get hold of....if anyone knows how or has a copy they might be willing to sell, I would be forever grateful.  Thanks!!!

1/350 scale would be perfect.  Do you have anymore information?  Thanks!

At the present time there is no model of Utah available.  There is a 1/700 scale model of the USS Florida in her 1930 configuration by Niko Models of Poland.  The kit is available from Pacific Front Hobbies of Oregon or Free Time Hobbies of Georgia, both on line vendors.  It is a very nicely done kit.  However, it is NOT in the same configuration as Utah in 1941.  It could be converted to an excellent likeness with a good set of plans.   WS

Thanks.  I think if any company in this country is likely to ever reproduce the Utah, it would likely be Iron Shipwrights.  I've emailed them to enquire is such a thing might ever be on the horizon.  One would think all of the ships at Pearl Harbor would, by now, have been given the tribute of a model kit reproduction.

I contacted Iron Shipwrights, and was advised that they are working on getting a pattern for the USS Utah into production right now.  It's going to have the weapons for the AG-16 version.  Great news!  And, it's about time.  No word on a release date yet.  Only problem is, I've never built a resin kit before, so this could be a challenge....a bit intimidating.

See Phil Kirchmeier's article on resin ship building elsewhere on FSM

I often recommend a resin "learner" kit to modelers who are interested in trying a larger ship but are worried about learning new techniques and the potential expense of screwing up.     Starting with a model such as the ISW 143' steel subchaser will give you some added confidence
