I highly recommend "A Dawn Like Thunder"  The true story of Torpedo Squadron 8.  It's great book that covers the Battle of Midway exceptionally well.

"To stand upon ramparts and die for our principles is heroic, but to sally forth to battle and win for our principles is something more than heroic." -- Franklin Delano Roosevelt. "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few." -- Winston Churchill

There was quite a discussion of the Battle of Midway and the book "Shattered Sword" in this forum several months ago.  I don't remember the original subject of the thread.  Many of the regulars participated though.  Anyone remember that thread name?

Shattered Sword is an immensely detailed work and also details with the strategic and command issues the Japanese faced. It's an epic work in my opinion. I would also suggest "Titans of the Seas", by James and William Belote. It's been awhile since I read it and at the time I didn't know as much about the Pacific war, however, it was an interesting read and really provided a great overview of that part of the war. If anyone has a read it more recently I'd be interested in hearing a fresher viewpoint.

I love the carrier war in the Pacific. My favorite battle has to be Leyte Gulf. The "baby flattops" against the Imperial Navy's battleships and cruisers is just classic. How courageous were the tin-cans in their defense of the carriers? Of course the Marianas Turkey Shoot is great stuff too with all the drama of the subs and landings in the dark.

I do agree that Guadalcanal had arguably the most intense naval engagements in the Pacific War. A lot of ship-to-ship.

Carrier Strike...

Being interested in carrier battles as of late, I have read "Shattered Sword" on Midway and another book concerning the Coral Sea engagement.  I recently bought and read "Carrier Strike" concerning the Battle of Santa Cruz, and I must say it was a really good read....Having read pretty detailed accounts of these three carrier to carrier clashes, the battle of Santa Cruz struck me as the most vicious and bloody of them all...and in fact, it was technically a Japanese victory on a tactical level...it was also the last time the Japanese seriosuly engaged the US in carrier vs carrier warfare...
