1/350 Kagero
Posted by Swanny on Thursday, January 14, 2010 9:48 AM

When I was nine I built a Revell submarine kit with my dad. That was actually the first model I ever built. Many, many years later I built a large Revell Cutty Sark kit which was immediately destroyed by a spastic cat. A good 28+ years have passed since then and I have built many aircraft, armor and automotive kits since then but no ships ..... until today.

To tell the truth I did not have any great desire to build a model ship. As some of you may know I have been working on a 1/350 Romulan Bird of Prey and thought it would be neat to build a 1/350 conventional ship simply to use to demonstrate relative size so I started looking around for a nice ship kit. While something like this Kagero kit may not fall into the normal modeler's 'first kit' in a genre I am not your normal modeler. I am definitely abnormal Propeller

Check out this PE sheet that came with it, this is one of two

The basic hull is together with the deck pieces lying in place

And finally the main bridge with about 75% of the PE in place. Keep in mind this entire assembly is barley the size of a US quarter.

I'm finding that I kind of like building ships.

Swanny:

Welcome to the wonderful world of ship building. You picked a nice 1st subject. It's just the right size such that it doesn't drag on for months completing it. My first one was the Tamiya 1/350 scale Missouri . I bought 2 aftermarket pe sets and it took me about 4 months of part time work in the evenings and weekends to finish. You're off to a very good start. Please continue to postpictures as you progress. I'm doing the opposite of what you're doing. I'm still taking a break from ships and have gone back to building 1/72 Luftwaffe planes.

Thanks Mike.

The wife went shopping this evening so I got to model for a while. Here is the complete bridge assembly ...

and how things are looking on the overall hull ...

I can't really paint anything yet because while I have just about every aircraft color you could ask for I have virtually nothing for ships. I am waiting on a White Ensign paint order to arrive before I can put some color to this one.

Nice clean build Swanny, looks good. What are you using to glue the PE ? CA or something else? I am waiting for some Gator Grip glue to arrive from the States before continuing with the PE on my Tirpitz build.

Looks good Swanny! I like watching your builds.

I've always had the desire to build a ship model WWAAAAYYY deep inside me but have never had any reason to. I have the 1975 boxing of the Revell U.S.S. Arizona as my only ship model.

I'll watch this build and get some inspiration, (and possibly courage.)

Looking good, Swanny.  I've been wondering if I should do a ship instead of an aircraft for my first build back.  You may be convincing me!

Thanks guys. Julian, I am using medium superglue with a toothpick shaved to a hair fine point for application and a bottle of accelerator for once the part is positioned. I have two evenings of modeling tied up in just the bridge. This ship is really starting to take away from my bench time on other builds.

Swanny - I know it may not be PC, but I thoroughly appreciated the notion of the "spastic cat".

I can see the question in its eyes 'what did I ever do to you?'

My cats are generally pretty well behaved just every once in a while one decides he just has to catch the brush while I'm painting.

Worth the time you are investing in her Swanny, the ship looks real sharp ! Keep the pic's coming, interesting to follow your build.

Cheers,

Julian

Looks great Matt (and welcome to the Light Side ;)

Very clean PE application. Anyone having PE/glue problems should check out the water-based Gator's Grip glue.
