WEM Colorcoat Question
Posted by djrost_2000 on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 7:49 PM

Project: Italeri 1/720 Admiral Kuznetsov.

WEM Colorcoats: Russian Northern Fleet Grey, Russian Deck Red.

Seeking information on what to use as thinner, as airbrush thinner and what ratio of paint to airbrush thinner to use.  Also concerned about overlapping with Testors MM paints.  Overlap will be inevitable on some sections.

TY,

Dave

I use Crown Brand or Parks Brand lacquer thinners from the local big-box hardware store.   Found no difference between them.

See the review at SteelNavy which contains a comparison of various thinners

http://www.steelnavy.com/wem_colourcoats.htm

There is no set "mixture".  The old recommendation to thin them to the consistency of skim milk applies.

The pigments settle in the tin.   They must be thoroughly mixed prior to use.   Insuffifient mixing may manifest itself as prolonged drying and uneven color.

I have found no problems in spraying over MM paints or using MM over Colourcoats

Ed,

Thanks for the reply.   Have printed the Steel Navy link and will look for Crown or Parks lacquer thinner.   It seems that when I thin paint for airbrushing it gets to the consistency of skim milk as well so I have an intuitive guideline to work with.

Thank you,

Dave

I use the Testors ModelMaster airbrush thinner.  It works extremely well with the WEM paints.  For ratio it depends on what you're doing.  Generally I do a 50/50 mix.

Hi strength Lacquer thinner works fine. WEM enamels don't take much of it to flow. Most paint compatibility problems disappear if you just let the first coat dry for a week. I just restocked my Italian WW2 collection, the colors are spot on.
