Hi Raider,

What are you using for plans or drawings for your 1/350 Midway build?  Cost?

Thanks in advance, and I have been following your build with great interest.

Cheers, Rick

Do you know if there is a kit of the original axial deck configuration that could be bashed to the 60s configuration?  Or is a scratchbuild the only route?

I don't keep up with the resin offerings, but there is one plastic kit that represents the Midway class as built:  the old Revell one.  It's not in the current Revell catalog, but it's fairly common on e-bay and among dealers in old kits.

It's conspicuously not up to the current state of the art.  It was (according to Dr. Graham's history of Revell) originally issued in 1954, and was one of Revell's first warship kits.  (I'm not sure whether it deserves the label "first plastic aircraft carrier kit."  I think the old Lindberg Essex-class kit may have beaten it - barely.)

Here's a review of the Revell kit:  http://www.steelnavy.com/RevellMidway.htm

I have the impression that the overall shapes are right; it probably could be turned into a serious scale model - with a lot of work.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

Thanks - appreciated, but not very encouraging for what I wanted to do.

Do you know if there is a kit of the original axial deck configuration that could be bashed to the 60s configuration?  Or is a scratchbuild the only route?  If the latter, any thoughts on where to obtain plans?

I believe I saw a thread here of someone doing a scratchbuild of a Midway at 1/350.

For 2.  The timeframe modeled with this kit is the late '70s so it would be very changed from her appearance in the early '60s.  There was a major reconstruction done in the late '60s thru the early '70s before making her long term deployment to be homeported in Yokosuka.

Questions - Arii 1/800 Midway
Posted by RTimmer on Monday, February 1, 2010 8:24 AM

Hi All,

A few questions on the above, which I am considering taking a stab at for a friend who served on her during the early/mid 60s.  I have looked at the previous posts on the forum, but have a few additional questions...

1. Has anyone checked the dimensions against the advertised scale?  Does it scale out to 1/800?

2. The air wing that comes in the box - which time period is it appropriate for?  What is included?

3. Since 1/800 is not a scale that the aftermarket provides any choice in, and with no experience at this scale (1/700 to 1/800), visually how would a substitution of the larger 1/700 or 1/720 look a this scale?  My thought is if I need to use aftermarket pieces for the appropriate air wing, railing or the finer detail items like antennas/radar.

Thanks in advance!

Cheers, Rick
