Revell Graf Zeppelin - help with PE and arms
Posted by Irish3335 on Thursday, February 11, 2010 1:44 AM

Hi all,

I am building the Revell 1/720 Graf Zeppelin and wanted to put some work in to making it as a completed carrier.  Since it never was finished, I get to have a lot of leeway with it, but still would like to keep it as Germany would have built it (along the lines of the Bismark).  Where can I get some upgraded guns / aircraft for the kit?  I have seen some nice PE for the small gun tubs, but some of the larger guns on the deck need to be replaced.  Any kits out there to do some upgrades, perhaps for the Bismark?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks much

Whatever you do, please, please don't populate it with jets. Turbines were so unreliable that it would have doomed her. A good wing would have had navalized 109s and 190s. Skywave makes a bunch of Luftwaffe stuff at 1/700 that will certainly be ok.

Toms Modelworks makes a PE set for the GZ

White Ensign Models made an airwing,  Me109T, navalized Stuka, and [IIRC] He29.  I don't know if they are still available through WEM,  check their catalog.    If not WEM, check with Starfighter Decals.   Starfighter has made several special orders with WEM for detail items which WEM has discontinued.

no jets, your right - had they continued construction, it would have most likely been populated by Stuka's and 109's (I have pictures of a folding wing Stuka, so it was not far off from making it mass production).  Thanks for the info on the aircraft, I made resin copies of the kit planes to really load the deck up, but they are very soft on detail.  Just need to get some deck guns to replace the poor ones that come with the kit

Check Flyhawk Models

http://www.flyhawkmodel.com/en/product_700.asp

They offer 2cm,  10 cm, 15cm, and 28cm Kreigsmarine guns and gun barrels

(Oh and BTW,  NAVEL is your belly button.  NAVAL refers to ships)

WSW makes the flak guns in resin in 1/700. fairly good ones too. I used them on some of my Samek builds and my tamiya Prinz Eugen (the 20mm quads).

Chasing the ultimate build.
