Wooden Decks
Posted by Psycho on Thursday, March 4, 2010 9:59 PM

I am looking at the wooden Decks that KA Models and Voyager offer for Revell's 1/350 "Bismarck" for example and wonder how good/useful they are. Do you just put them on top of the plastic deck, do they replace the plastic deck, or what?

Who's got experience with them and can post some info?

Check Dade Bell's build of the Kongo. This second part shows how to fit a wooden deck:

I am considering buying a wooden deck overlay for the Fujimi Haruna I bought but the price makes your eyes water.................Big Smile

Greetings!

I am in the process of building my 2nd Tamiya 1/350 Bismarck and ordered the new KA wooden deck set from Hobbylink in Japan.   Price was as expected and the shipping was not too pricey.   The web site quoted 3-5 weeks for SAL but arrived in under 2.   I also bought the replacement metal barrels for the guns from them.

Looking at the instructions the decks need some small fittings removed prior to installing the deck but after that I did a trial fit and it was excellent.   When I am ready to install it will involve removing the adhesive plastic covering on the back of the wooden deck and simply laying it down over the plastic deck.

With the slightly different shades on the individual timbers I will probably leave the wood unstained.

I am sure the KA Deck for the Revell Bismarck will be just as easy.

I mentioned the deck colory since I just purchased the Academy 1/350 Graf Spee Premium with the wooden deck included and that deck will need some light staining as it is quite light overall....just for your info.

Hope that helps a little but I am new at this as well.

Cheers!

Hmm, very good info. Thanks.

I always wondered whether I have to sand the deck to make it smooth for the wooden deck to "stick" properly.

Thanks for the Modelshipwright link. I am not inclined to use the wood pieces on current and future builds though. The planks just look way too wide to me. A fairly quick count of the number of planks on some of the pieces, plus a little bit of scaling on the screen, makes it appear that there are about 70-80 planks across the widest part of the ship. Now per wiki the beam was 101 + feet, which puts each plank at 15 -17 inches wide. I'm sure they weren't even half of that.
