Seawolf Painting Help
Posted by Scotty T on Sunday, March 7, 2010 7:04 AM

Hey guys, I am trying to get some advice about the hull painting on the USS Saewolf (SSN-21) and the Seawolf class.  Any help would be great.  Is the bottom of the hull the anti-fowling rust red on some ships or is it a black or grey.  I am trying to make them look correct.  I am a rotorhead by trade so do not know much about subs.  Thank you.  This has probably been discussed before, but I havent found it yet.

It would seem that no US Navy submarines of any class are being painted with anti-fouling red any longer. There are different shades of dark grays, it depends on the component being painted. The sonar domes, torpedo tubes, seachests, and after cone area (where the stern plane and rudders are) are not covered with anechoic tiles and have a more satin finish. Whereas the main portion of the hull, where the tiles are, have more matte finish. I hope this helps, if you have a more specific question, go ahead and ask, I'm working on a 688 in drydock right now, they're all painted about the same.

I'm from the government and I'm here to help.
