Old Baltic ship wrecks discovered.
The ghostly stearing wheel of a 19th century sailing ship emerges from the darkness after being discovered by a gas company laying pipeline between Russia and Germany. The gas consortium, Nord Stream, discovered the wrecks east of the Swedish island of Gotland, while plotting a path for a 1200 km pipeline in the Baltic Sea. Many of the 12 wrecks are in good preservation. Three of the wrecks are lying up-side down with intact hulls at a depth of 130 meters. The oldest wreck probably dates back to medieval times and could be 800 years old, while the others are likely from the 17th to the 19th centuries. Swedish marine archaeology experts analysing pictures of the wrecks, determined the doomed ships are of high historic value. No decision has been made to salvage these vessels.
Thousands of wrecks dating from the Viking age to 20th century warships, have been found in the Baltic Sea, which does not have the ship worm that destroys wooden ships in warmer saltier seas.
