Information on the OLIVER HAZARD PERRY- FFG7
Posted by tankerbuilder on Thursday, March 11, 2010 8:09 PM

I have a question for the person or persons more informed about modern U.S.Navy vessels. The DRAGON kit of the ship is really nice and will be moreso when it,s done.I have a question though. Is the DRAGON kit the ship with the short flight deck area or the longer flight deck area. The reason for asking is the WHITE ENSIGN MODELS photoetched set mentions that if the ship is the shorter decked area that the Choppers are different than the ones in the kit, which is wrong. How do you tell if you didn,t do research on the ship type? I just wanted to do a build for my own pleasure .I am not really worried about the accuracy of the ship in this area.I just liked the looks of the ship.I got it at the ALAMO SQUADRON/IPMS show in live oak(north of SAN ANTONIO) the 20th of the last month. The ship found it,s way to me from a vendor because its,(the KIT) complete and the price($12.00) was right!! Does it really matter that much? I am not going to enter it in any shows,I just wanted to know.    tankerbuilder

is it the 700 ingrham?  that kit has the option for either flight deck, the white lines are decals, but there is only one option, it doesn't provide for both landing grid lines iirc, and also has two types of choppers in it.

edit:  i reread, it's the ffg7, sorry, i think it has both, i'll have to check my kit of the perry when i gets home.  i think they are the same molds though, so it may have both.

Short-hulled Perrys operated with SH-2 Seasprite helicopters.

Long-hulled Perrys operated with SH-60 Seahawks.

Seasprites are smaller than the Seahawks and lack the LAMPS interface with the controlling ship.

The Dragon Ingraham does not include a Seasprite.    What John @ WEM was probably telling was that if you are modeling a short-hulled Perry, for accuracy sake you should not put a SH-60 on the flight deck.

The kit is of the Ingraham FFG-61,  last of the class.   It is a long-hull

As far as PE,  are you sure you were checking on the 1:700 scale Perry set from WEM.   Their 1:350 scale set is beautiful,   but their current catalog doesn't show a corresponding set in 1:700.

dragon put out two perry class in 700 scale.  the ohp and the ingraham.  i've got both kits and just checked them.  they are identical except the decal sheets and the ingraham has it's own pe set included.  they both have options for the short or long hull, it's just a different peice, either 55 or 61 as you choose. the flight deck is attached to the upper hull in the mold.  i don't know what the helos are that are included, but there are two different types in each kit.

hope that helps a bit more.
