best putty out there?
Posted by Pcalder on Thursday, March 25, 2010 10:13 AM

Hey guys, a question for you about what you all prefer for modelling putty. When I was growing up, the guy that taught me to build models was a fan of the Testor's contour putty, but as I do more I just find it a little lacking in some ways. I also know that where we lived (far away from civilization in Maine) didn't have a lot of options and that was about the only thing you could buy within a 100 mile area (before the internet, of course).

What do you guys use, and what do you find works best? I'm posting here in the ship forum because ships are all I build (1/350 scale exclusively).

Thanks!

My favorite putties are Bondo catalyzed body putty (similar product sold under Evercoat brand) and Bondo Spot Glazing putty  ( a solvent putty).    Both are typically sold in auto parts stores.  Other products include 3M Acryl Blue putty (also an auto parts product).   The spot glazing putty will cost you less than a tube of hobby brand,  be larger, and last longer.     I've also found catalyzed putty at my local Lowes hardware store.

I haven't bought a tube of hobby brand putty in years.  It pays to shop around to other types of stores for hobby materials.  The model logo adds an additional couple of bucks to the cost.

Check the Tools & Techniques forums for more complete info on putty options
