Aircraft Carrier Deck Scuppers

I believe what you are looking for are tie downs vice scuppers. A few years back I also did a diorama of F4U-1D and tug - 1/48th scale - on the deck of the USS Hancock. At that time an outfit called Flat Tops and More had the tie downs, in 1/48th scale in brass strips and I used those. Unfortunately, I just tried accessing their site and it is no longer there. Too bad, they had a good product and I was most pleased with the outcome. Here is a review of their product from 2008. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I am looking to do a diorama based on the box from my Tamiya 1:48 F4U-1D being hauled on the deck of a WWII carrier such as the Wasp.  I see that the deck is planking but broken up by linear scuppers that cross the deck.

I would like to model them and wonder if they are available as a detail, either as a part or as a decal?

White Ensign Models makes a PE tie-down set in 1:48 scale.   It includes both the WWII "Greek Key" as well as modern 4 and 5 point stars.   Chains, straps, and ratchets are also included

Another option for you to pursue might be Nautilus Models.  They make laser-engraved real wood decks

Ed - I am so glad that I asked. I had no idea that I would get such a complete response. I was having a friend try to replicate those tiedowns (not scuppers, as I have found out from you all) as a decal.

I am not sure that I want to pay for a pre-made deck as I want to do the work. I will need to find some balsa wood strips. Are those available in scale at my LHS?

your hobby store & even some hardware stores should have balsa wood.

You might want to look at bass wood (i.e. Linden),  also a hobby shop item.   Bass is a tighter grained wood than balsa.  It still cuts,  sands, and carves easily.   It will accept a finish better without raising grain than balsa.  Check the RC plane section of your LHS.  Bass is used extensively there.

Ed - thanks for the tip. In the meantime, I went to my LHS and found that he knew of another product made by Eduard. It is also an aircraft carrier deck in plastics and PE. And the price is right (<$10) - I have it on order now.
