MkVII U-boat rigging
Posted by SpursN17 on Thursday, April 1, 2010 4:32 PM

Hi

I usually make aircraft but was tempted to do Revell's 1/72 U-boat.

I was going to rig it with fishing line unless anyone uses anything better?, and would you rig it before painting or after?

Cheers

The rigging is one of the LAST things you do, otherwise you wil knock it off. Repeatedly. Ask me how I know. In 1/72 I would go with, at the most, fly fishing line to keep things in scale.

White ensign models sells Lycra rigging line which gives an excellent scale effect.

Thanks, I'll paint first then.

Is the lycra rigging coloured or is it transparent, and does anyone have any pics of it?

Thanks julian.

From the pics I've seen of the VII the wires look pretty dark, can you colour the lycra with a permanent marker pen?

For my own Uboat (look for it in the (anti) submarine warfare GB) i used ordinary sowing thread that isn't "fuzzy". Mostly because it was wound up like the antennae wire on such ships would be. Fishing line is smooth though very easily handled... Another thing going for sowing thread is the fact that it will soak up paints and washes where fishing line can only be painted on the outside.

Before i assembled it onto my model i first gave the thread a thin black wash all over to age it and once it was assembled onto the model i gave it a rust wash in a random fashion to conclude with some brownish chalk, again in a random fashion.

Hope this helps you in deciding for your own methodSmile

No, you're just confusing me now

I'll get some of each and see what's best, then use the wrong one and hate it forever!

Sorry to disappoint you here but I was born in Plymouth and lived there for 10 years, then 1 year in Redbourn. After that I moved to Holland Wink

You might also be interested in this material, EZ Line, reviewed here: http://misc.kitreview.com/tools/ezlinereviewbg_1.htm

I picked up some on eBay, and like that you can stretch it tight before cementing in place. The smaller of the widths could work for ship rigging maybe, and it is already dark colored so may not need paint.
