Bismarck Construction - Cable Reels?
Posted by stevedb227 on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 11:38 PM

Greetings!

As I am building the 1/350 Tamiya Bismarck kit I noticed there are a number of cable reels on the decks.   My question is since these reels are kitted as empty what went on them.   I am guessing rope but possibly fire hose or steel cable.

If anyone could please tell me what to put on the reels I would very much appreciate it.

Thanks

Steve B.

Hi Steve, I have been trying to find an answer to that myself Geeked I have found only one photo of reel without it's canvas cover and I am 99% sure that it is used as storage space for the ship's mooring lines. The generic PE Kriegsmarine reel set contains different sized reels so i would hazard the guess that fire hoses and wires for the paravanes were stored on them as well. On some of the supply vessels I sailed on we had general purpose reels for anchor handeling wires, spare tow lines etc. on board. Just my 2 cents on the subject.

cheers,

My apologies for not replying.    Thank you very much for your answer.   I guess I will just construct them with the covers over them.   Makes it easier!

Thanks again.

Steve- You could certianly arrange a generic blend of different cables through out the ship. Use different colored thread or wire for fire hose (light gray), cables (dark grey), etc. You could paint the fire spindles (or reels) red, the cable spindles gray, as they do on some ships.

I always lean towards a little artistic license in times like these, helps keep the creative juices flowing as it were. Historic accuracy is great when the data's avialable, but in it's absence why not have some fun. It's all part of being a "project manager"

Hi, I recently acquired the KAGERO 3d book on the BISMARK. The computer graphics are amazing and they show these reels in pretty fair detail. They were indeed used for mooring lines, fire hoses, fuel hoses and paravane cables. You can use real fine wire (twisted) for the paravanes, and just use whatever for the others.     tankerbuilder
