I thought so too! If you get those rails then make sure you use the whole three rails. If you don,t she will not look right when done. The ships I captained ALL had three bar rail EXCEPT on top of the wheelhouse. Those were two rail.    Tankerbuilder

I ended up using the Tom's Modelworks generic railings and their ladders set.  The railing set are mostly three rails, but does include some two rail stuff that I used atop the wheelhouse and also on the bipod mast (antenna mast).

I have been trying to figure out if the rails should be three bar or two bar.

I obtained this picture, and a couple of other close ups which seem to show 3 bar rails, but the lowest rail is very close to the deck.   I guess in 1/700 scale either is correct, or rather, equally incorrect.

For ladders and rails I purchased a few sets of the WEM PE-174 3-BAR RAILS.  They're not expensive and look about right for this ship.  You can cut your ladders to size which is helpful.  I think you would need two of these to fit out the Colombo Express.

When I was looking at a close up of the Revell set I'm not sure I would be happy with the results but I would have to learn more about it.  I'm surprised that set hasn't been released yet as it's been on the "soon to be released" list for ages.  Also the Revell set is UKL 12.00 where the WEM 3-BAR RAILS are UKL 1.49 each.

This is the WEM set.

Does the kit come with any styrene rails or stairs at all? I have the 1/400 QM2 in progress and the styrene rails are the best I've ever seen to date. Its a shame if they didn't use the same technology on this relatively new kit. Maybe the scale is too small to achieve this in styrene.

The stairs are molded into the sides of deckhouses. I have cut them all away since I intend to install the PE ones.  There are no handrails on any of them.

I THOUGHT I had posted a reply earlier ... maybe I'm just getting senile, or maybe it's the New and Improved forum ...

Looking at a fuzzy enlargement of the fuzzy pic from the Revell website, the Colombo Express PE looks to be all 2-bar PE and maybe a few stairways, no antennas. Looking at a few pics of the monster, though, most of the antennas should be able to be scratchbuilt with stratched sprue and some scraps of PE or thin polystyrene, except for that Christmas-tree looking thing on the starboard bridge wing. If some satellite communications domes are needed, I know that JAG makes some good white metal ones in various sizes.

Thanks, davros

Hard to see in much detail, but there does look like items that are not railings nor stairs. I've asked my source if I can get it yet, and how much.

Am I right in thinking these are 2-bar rails?    Seems like there should be three, but maybe not.

PE for Colombo Express

I read on one of the other CE threads the other day that Revell will offer a PE set for this ship.  However, my superstructure is just about ready for the railings and ladders.  When I got home yesterday from a trip, the mail contained the generic railings and ladders I ordered from TM.  I want to continue work on the model, so intend to use them- they look like they will work fine.

The things that cry out for PE other than railings or ladders are the antennas and such on top of the bridge.  If I use the TM ladders and railings, I assume I can later get the Revell set and just use those, if they are included.  Generally antennas and such on top of the bridge or other parts of the superstructure are the last things I put in place.

Does anyone know if antennas and antenna masts will be included in the Revell PE set?

BTW, I will get back to work on cutting those containers tonight, so should be able to report in a day or two on how that work is going.
