OLIVER HAZARD PERRY FFG-7
Posted by tankerbuilder on Saturday, May 8, 2010 1:20 PM

Hi!,It,s me again! As you all know I had questions about the new DRAGON version of the U.S.S. THE SULLIVANS. It concerned the bumps(pimples) all over the hull. I got many answers that were very helpful and I am proceeding with that build. Now, while I am waiting for glue to dry a new ship was started on the ways.I have started the ACADEMY ,OLIVER HAZARD PERRY FFG-7. I would NOT have known about the extra parts to lengthen the flight deck or stern if I hadn,t bought the P.E. set to go with this ship! The instructions neither show the parts as NOT USED or make mention of them anywhere in the pages!  So if you,re building her ,this is a heads up! If you want the longer stern use the parts as follows, put the hull together then using part 39 you will be extending the hull. Now use part 48 as the deck extension. After that all you have to do is use part 40 (the longer flight deck.) Now there, you have a later version of the O.H.P!. I don,t know why the companies putting these kits out can,t make these things clear,do you?? I wonder where else I am going to find surprises!! I also noticed the same thing with TRUMPETER ,but, at least they tell you what ,is for what era! Well, that,s all I have for now .If you build ships watch out, there,s some surprises in those boxes!        tankerbuilder

The USN operated two versions of the Oliver Hazard Perry FFG. There is a short hull version and a long hull version. The short hull version operated a single or two SH-2F/G LAMPS  I helecoptor, the long hull version was modified to operate two SH-60B LAMPS III helecoptors. The lengthened vessel has "RAST" system that is necessary for operation the SH-60B (today MH-60R). Of the 51 vessels purchased by the USN 31 were either built as or modified in to the long hull version. FFG-7 was a short hull, FFG-8 was rebuilt into a long hull. There is a list at www.globalsecurity.org which tells which catagory every Perry fits into. I am unaware of the hull type for Australian, Spanish, and Taiwanesse vessels which were built new for their owners. Other Perry hulls transfered from the USN ot other Navies are short hull versions. If you have a specific ship your building I can look it up and reply.
