Hey Big Jake ,
Im also in the process of rehabing a model of "constitution & I have found some discrepiances with info on her like some of the web site pictures of the actual ship do not protray her as she was in 1812 etc according to other sources.I hear that the cannons that are on her main deck are not even the correct ones

USS Constitution

I just had a chance to see USS Constitution in Boston this past Sept. '02. The main differance are the colors. According to the Museum next door, the ship is currently painted the correct colors for the war of 1812. When the ship was first launched it was WHITE in the inside of the Bukwarks, it was painted dark green somewhere between 180 -1805, closest they could come to the date. The Guns on the ship are the correct ones , remember we did not have a Cannon Foundry that could make the number of guns the ship needed, (Paul Revere had not started making Guns until 1802) so when the small navy captured a ship they took the guns off that one if possible and if they were the right size.

Some of the guns on board now have the crest of KG3 (King George III), which is correct because they were taken from English Ships. The Revell model is incorrect on two major points. The cannon doors are not single piece units, but doubles, (hinged on top/bottom). The decorations on the stern are too many, you need to remove several. I will post as short srticle on the changed. I working on a BIG Cutty Sark article with matching pictures on Naplak's site

http://www.naplak.com/modeling/index.html

Dur to security concerns, I was not allowed to see the birthing deck, but the upper and lower decks are open, I burned up 4 rolls of film, 96shots. I found the ship is smaller than what the Revell model scale is based with the 1/96th scale men.

Big Jake ,
Thanks for the info. Something that concerns me . The revell kit has carronades on the main deck .Is this corect for 1812? or the KG3's I have been under the impression that the main deck had 24#'s. Also you are right on the bulwarks as the revell instructs them to be white when they should be green. If the main deck does have 24's then I will trash the revell deck & replace it with a real wooden deck. Thanks for your inf. Jamest

I just completed an admilty version of the Revell Const. kit and will probally do one for myself. The ship did have carronades along the entire top deck, the heavier guns 24/32's were on the gun deck. The inst. are wrong on a few items, The gun carrage's are a red brown vs. brown. The pin rail on the ship are a light varnish color, The trim work on the quarter gallery's and stern are WHITE not GOLD The roof and lower section of the quarter gallery's are black, not copper/gold. There where three cannon ports with no lid on the stern plate. ( you can cut these in the rear section). The cannon doors were painted black on the inside not RED, matter of fact, mostly the British painted the insides of their ship red (CHEAPEST PAINT COLOR) nothing to do with hiding blood, but it certainly helped.

I would be glad to make copies of the pictures of the ship and rigging, All I ask for is you pay for them I have 96 + photos and send you every angle and closeups for your referance. enmail me at jbgroby@bellsouth.net
