U.S.S. Constitution (boats) Scale Question
Posted by Tnonk on Friday, May 21, 2010 10:27 PM

Hi everyone!,

I'm a newby & this is my first post so I hope I get this right.

I'm not normally a ship modeler, usually I build WW II Aircraft in 1/32 scale.  I built ships when I was younger in the 1970's. I built Revells 1/96 Constitution in 1979 and never finished it.  It was also my last model (ship or otherwise for nearly 20 years).

I got back into modeling in the late 1990's with 1/32 scale aircraft.  I need the large size for the eyes and cuz I'm slow as molasses as a builder.

Anywho, I'm taking a break from aircraft and decided to get back into ship modeling.  I got a great deal on a Lindberg Jolly Roger on ebay because I was looking for a frigate in a relative large scale to build & the Lindberg seem to fit - the 5.00 price didn't hurt either.

The Lindberg Jolly Roger/La Flore is a wonderful kit & I'm really enjoying myself.  I've worked on the hull painting (I'm building it as an American Frigate - black with a white stripe), I've finished the gundeck (I drilled each cannon barrel out and added ropes) and I worked on the foremast (painting and rope stirrups).

As you can see, I bounce around on different parts of the build.  I'm hoping to finish the gundeck and mount both decks and close the hull up in the next couple of weeks.

The reason for this post is that I'm hoping to use some of my old boats from the spares box to use as lifeboats on this build.  I know they came from an old model of the U.S.S. Constitution (probably Revell or Monogram) from the 1970's.  I'm going to hang a boat from davits on the stern and at least one at the stern (either port or starboard - or both).

The problem is, I only have 4 from the spares box and I'd like at least one (probably two) more - but I want the same ones that I have.  The detail on these boats are great but I don't have a clue which scale to start looking for.  The detail on these small boats is better than the detail on the boats from my 1/120 Monogram Constitution and even comparable in shape & detail to the 1/96.

The 30' cutter and launch measures out to 6.2 cm (2-7/16").  The 28' Cutter measures out to 5.9 cm (2-5/16") and the 23' jollyboat measures out to 5 cm (1-7/8").  These are all close approximates and may be off slightly.

Any help on the scale and/or which kit these boats came in would be appreciated.  I don't mind buying a kit just for the parts, if I can get the right kit.

If anyone's interested (and I can figure out how & where to post 'em) I'll post some pics of the build (that is, if ya'll do that on this site) - I haven't had that much time to look around in this site just yet.

Thanks, and

Best Regards,

Adrian A.
