Question on a sub kit
Posted by burner12 on Wednesday, June 2, 2010 3:27 PM

Would this kit be plastic or metal? And if metal where is a good place to get a plastic Sturegeon class?

The kit is 1:350 scale by Yankee Modelworks and it is resin with white metal details (planes & projections).   May also have some photoetched brass parts (rail stanchions, prop blades).

Resin is a form of plastic.   It cements with superglue vs the solvent cement you may be familiar with.   Yankee subs are actually a good intoduction to resin modeling.

There are no other polystryene plastic Sturgeon sub kits in 1:350 scale.    There used to be some 1:700 scale Sturgeons by Dragon in their two-fer Sea Power series of kits.  They're now OOP.

A quick search for http://www.yankeemodelworks.com/

Yankee Modelworks is working very hard to bring you high quality resin shipmodel kits.

Do you need different types of glue for resin or could you use the type of glue for plastic models along with the paint?

Use superglue (cyanoacrylate / CA) or epoxy to glue the parts.   Solvent glues such as used on polystyrene models (which melt the plastic) have no affect on the resin nor white metal.

You can use your favorite brand of paint, enamel or acrylic, on resin.   In addition, since resin is not affected by "hot" solvents you may find other paint lines available for use such as auto spray lacquers or household sprays

Woo woo!

Just picked up a Yankee Modelworks Flight II Los Angeles sub at the Squadron Open House.   It was on the scratch & dent table and was marked at 22.95.   I had a credit balance with Squadron in payment for a commission build I did for their Nuremburg Toy Show booth -- that means the kit was FREE!!

Woo woo!

A parts break down on what you may find in a Sturgeon box, based on what is in the LA Flt II box ...

1x resin hull,  3x periscopes (WM),  2x Fairwater planes (WM),  2x Stern planes (WM),  1ea upper & lower rudder (WM),  prop hub,  prop cap.  1 fret of PE with props,  cleats,  stanchions, lookout guard rails with flag staff,   bow jack staff.  1 sheet of decals with hull numbers, names, draft marks, and DSRV targets.
