For Sale: HELLER LE CHEBEQ - Please Help
Posted by paultomasi on Thursday, June 3, 2010 4:05 PM

Hello all

I have an unbuilt (still in the box) model model of Le Chebec. This is a HUGE model (1/50 scale).

The detail on even some of the smaller parts is astounding!

When built, this model measures just over 1m in length! Wow!

I am wondering whether I should sell this model as I can't see myself ever getting around to putting it together. I have no experience (nor the equipment) in painting with airbrussh - so I can't see myself doing justice to the finished model as an expert modeller would do.

If I do decide to sell (and I presume this is a rare find), what value could I attach to it?

Is it worth more in the box or is it worth more built and painted?

Is there a market out there among modellers who would like to snap this model off my hands?

And if so, how much could I expect to sell it for?

Or, should I hold onto it for another 10 years? - Will it's value increase noticably? I don't have many years left as it is. Perhaps if I pass it down to one of  my children would it be worth holding onto for another 50 years?

Lots of question.... no real idea what to do....

Please help me decide the best route (not necessarily the most profitable - although the money would come in handy as I have not worked for quite a while due to my health)...

Thank you.

According to this website http://www.modellmarine.de/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1150 i think it says about 105 Euros.

Because this is questions about selling it, i dont think FSM will mind, but it does frown on people trying to sell things on here.

It took me 6 months, $170,- US and three attempts on E-bay to get hold of one of these models and have it shipped to Europe. That should tell you enough about the value of the Heller Chebeck.

Cheers,

Julian

OP, I do not think you should have titled your post "For Sale" I think that is the part which may raise a flag. Otherwise, I know what you mean regarding too complicated and/or expensive to start as that is when the value drops.

I have one myself and know what you mean.

I should add that either you subscribe to the policy that if you will not commence to build within one week of acquisition then you should either not purchase or if the kit has sat unbuilt when there was time to commence building then one should sell as it will otherwise continue to sit.

hiya BJ

I spent quite some time looking at photos of your models - very impressive collection.

Just wondering, when you get to the sails of the Le Chebec, will you be using the plastic ones that come in the kit of will you replace them with material ones?

As for putting it together myself, the reason why I haven't so far is because I feel it's worth more in the box as it is - as I'm unlikely to do what you professionals do with an airbrush etc... (even though I have a VERY sharp eye for the tiniest detail). I'm frightened of devaluing it by trying to put it together.

By the way, I know it's length but can you please tell me it's height (to the highest point) and how wide it is at it's widest point?

Thank you for your reply.

Here's the finished article with home cobbled sails.

Hi Paul,

On the sail issue I've learned to take some off while silk from a material store, Mark my lines and have a local seamtress run it through her sewing machine, run usually less than $10-20.  Then depending on how I want to have her look during the final stage I either "dirty" the sails of rough them up a bit.

On the heigh,t I'm not 100% sure but I think she be just under 2 ft. with the mast and lanteen sail "peak"

As far as the tiny detail, I say this to all modeleres, it ony one brush stroke at a time, what else you go to do>

Jake
