Airfix 1:600 Moskva
Posted by Redshirt 5 on Friday, June 4, 2010 1:50 PM

Hey folks.  I just picked up an Airfix 1:600 Moskva in an antique sale of all places.  It's a beautiful kit, but will probably need a lot of work to properly detail.

Does anyone know of any suppliers who manufacture aftermarket parts for this baby?  All I've been able to find so far is the photoetch kit made by White Ensign Models.

What about 1:600 aircraft...the kit only comes with 2 Ka-25 choppers, and I'd like to see a few more on the deck.

Any help or suggestions you guys can offer would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Unfortunately, 1/600 is one of the "odd" scales - options abound in 1/700 and 1/350. Trumpeter makes a number of 1/700 Soviet helicopters but the difference would be noticeable unless you replaced ALL of the helos, check www.squadron.com to see what they might have in stock. As far as PE goodies go, White Ensign is who I would have turned to, sorry.

Darn, that's what I thought.  I'm going to pick up the White Ensign set then.

Thanks for the info.

The Skywave 1/700 Russian/Soviet warship equipment sprues (quite a few of the Dragon 1/700 kits have these in) could also be a very good source of small detail parts like weapons systems, radars etc. Yes, they're nominally 1/700 - but many parts on Skywave detail sprues, especially the smaller and finer ones, are actually significantly overscale for 1/700 scale, so should look fine on a 1/600 model. A bit of research might be needed to work out which Airfix bits to replace, though - as I don't think the Airfix kit instructions (even in the earliest releases) name any of the parts.

The Skywave set includes some Ka-25 helos, but I think these are more or less in-scale for 1/700, so noticeably too small; though, if you replaced all of the kit helos (as mfsob suggested) with 1/700 ones, the scale difference would be less obvious.

I appreciate it is now onwards of two years however I notice this issue arises frequently,. I direct your quest in the region of :

www.tumblingdiceuk.com

Based in Nottingham, England they produce 1/600 white metal casting covering land, sea and air. The main core being aircraft of WW1, WW2, 1950s to 2000, Nationalities include: American, British, French, German, Japanese, & Russian in the main but with limited other countries too. Also they provide mini decals and a painting service too. Costs are very reasonable e.g. six of the same single engined aircraft around £2.00.(GBP) ,

Take a look - you will be suprised!
