Bondoman --

What a wonderful piece of web research you did.  I went ahead and ordered the Colourcoat from Snyder & Short.  It is hard to believe that after 1 year my 1/72 Swordfish is veering towards completion. I just finished rigging the upper to lower mainplanes and am now working on scratch building the torpedo crutch. Pictures will come in due course.

The diorama idea came to me after seeing p. 24 of the May 2010 FSM (Avenger on a carrier deck war bonds scene) - of course this lengthens the time to completion.

This from John Snyder, of  White Ensign Models (Colourcoat has all the colors on his site)

"Flight deck color varied from ship to ship, though generally was AP 507A Admiralty Dark Grey. Some ships had camouflage-patterned flight decks, so you would possibly need to be specific about which ship you're depicting. "

And this from Edgar Brooks on the Aeroscale Forum:

"RN carrier decks were steel; that's why Kamikazes had so much difficulty; if they came in, at an angle, they just bounced off. As they were welded, then smoothed and painted, seams would be unlikely. Normal colour was grey, and tie-downs were rings, about every 6 feet, with a circular centre, of steel. Apparently you became acutely aware of them, if you hit one during a game of deck hockey."

And this from Brigandine on the same forum:

"I'm trying to remember the details of this one! Still, it does show a fairly plain looking deck, with non skid (asphalt based?) surface, showing tyre marks, and the markings. The elevator in the background has no distinguishing border painted around it. The whole finish is a dull, non descript dark grey."

My own particular RN project is of a Bogue Class (Attacker Class) CVE, so it has wooden decks. You'll note that the Just Planes deck would not work at all, either material or tiedowns.

Here's a pic from 1948 of Illustrious. You can see a row of tiedowns under the Seafire.

HMS Illustrious 1940 1/72 deck diorama - joints

I'm finishing up my tribute to my mother-in-law's wartime boyfriend who flew on the 1940 Taranto raid in a Swordfish.  This involves a deck diorama of the Swordfish being prepared for takeoff.  The plane is 1/72 and the diorama will be about 8" x 9" of excerpted deck.

While I have many photos of the Illustrious including many with Swordfish to inspire the scene, I can't tell from the photos besides general grime, tire tracks, exposure to sea water/sea air, etc. if the deck has expansion joints or some other surface feature that needs to be included.

I considered starting with the Just Planes 1/72 USN carrier deck here but this is a model of a wooden deck and that is not appropriate for the armored deck Illustrious.  So, I'm starting with sheet styrene and need to build up the details.

Surely the deck must have been made of various sheets of steel -- the question is how large these were so I can scribe accordingly.

Any suggestions welcome!
