Brass Barrels / Blast Bags

I used Squadron putty to do the blast bags on my Tamiya Bismark. Shape the putty and let it sit a bit so it firms up, making it easier to do the folds.

thanks plasticjunkie, question - what kind of putty do you use?  Milliput or another type?  If you have any pictures of the blast bags you scratch built I would love to see them.

I use white glue, built up in layers. maybe about 5-6 per barrel, added with a toothpick.

You can use milliput too. I used the green squadron putty. I have a Dr. appt. in a few minutes but I will snap a couple of pictures later so you can get an idea.

You could also use plastic modeling clay. It comes in rectangular blocks and is usually cheap. I used some of this to sculpt blast bags on my 1/200 scale Yamato's main guns and it came out quite nice. I sprayed over the whole turret with Tamiya's Kure grey paint and the clay took the paint just fine. it's been several years later and the blast bags have not shrunk nor has the paint peeled off (note, I don't handle them either). I found the clay easy to work with and there is no drying time involved. Give it a try.

Here's a couple of quick pictures. I built this Tamiya Bismark back in 1981. She survived multiple moves and the test of time..........till my brother in law almost dropped her and caused minor damage to the rigging, cranes and railings. She will eventually make it to dry dock for repairs and some long overdue detailing.
