Nautilus Models Square-bridge Fletcher Conversion
Posted by EdGrune on Saturday, July 3, 2010 4:18 PM

I had mentioned in a prior posting that I had received the Nautilus Models 1:144 scale square-bridge conversion for the Revell Fletcher kit and that some additional information would be forthcoming.

The conversion includes three  resin superstructure pieces which replace the kit parts,  the O2-level, the square bridge deck, and the bridge.

The pieces are molded with  a mix of details.  The hatches have dog and hinge details while those item on the basic styrene kit are lacking.   There are also no molded on hand rails, which are on the basic styrene kit.  The pencil line is my guide for adding some fuse wire to replicate the rails.  There are also some manageable bubbles in the castings.

The bridge deck has the raised areas for the torpedo directors and MK51 gun directors but they are missing and will need to be scratchbuilt.    There were a couple of peloruses (pelorusi?) among the small parts.  The flag bags will have to be cut from the basic kit.

The bridge is cast with open bridge-wing doors and ports.   The aft wall is detailed as is the overhead.   There is a binacle and a wheel stand in the small parts.   No EOT or chart tables.   No cast doors.   They will have to come from PE replacements I guess.  The enclosed area to the left of the photo contains the captains sea cabin and the radio & radar shacks.

Stacked up they look like this.  They scale out correctly to drawings fro DestroyerHistory.org and other references

I spend a day last weekend assembling the forward superstructure, removing the early 20mm gun tubs, and replacing them with larger 40mm twin tubs  (from yellow styrene no trespassing signs).  The new tubs will be populated with replacements from White Ensign Models  (I'll need 5 twin mounts).  I'll pobably also replace all the 20's with WEM items for consistency since I'll be adding the three in the heart-shaped tub at the stern.
