Trumpeter 1/350 Graf Spee WIP ( Picture Heavy)
Posted by Nachtflieger on Saturday, July 10, 2010 6:43 PM

Hi All!

I am a long time armor, and aircraft modeler. Recently, I decided to try other models after getting a bit burnt out on Tigers and Shermans.Big Smile

This is the Trumpeter 1/350 scale Graf Spee with the White Ensign PE set (actually for the Academy kit), MK 1 Design wooden deck, and PE set, and Master Models Brass barrel set for the Graf Spee. I am about 80% done, with a lot of paint touch up to do, ship's boats to build, aircraft to finish, finish the rigging, etc. I'm not sure I like how the rigging is turning out. I used EZ Line, and it seems a bit overscale to me. I don't think I'll re-do the rigging, but on my next ship model, I'll try something else.

I've been working on this for about 3 weeks off and on. This is only my 3rd ship model since I was a kid, over 30 years ago, and the other two have stalled out.

Comments welcome, and thanks for looking.

Harshman, and Julian: thanks for the comments, I appreciate them.Smile I agree that the wood deck looks really good. It fit almost perfectly. It has a self-adhesive back, and it sticks really well, so you basically have one shot to get it on right! The ship is about 21 inches long at the waterline, and about 22 when you include the stern flagpole.

Thanks again for looking.

Nate - Only your third ship model? You're a natural!  Nice paint and the deck looks great!  Man, nothing looks like wood but wood!    I gotta spring for some wood decks for my next project. Did you wash or stain the deck?

I agree the rigging may be a little over scale, but it still looks really good. Have you tried UNI-Caenis thread?

It's fly fishing thread and it is really thin. I used it on a couple of my ships and you can hardly see it! I actually ordered some thicker stuff for my next model. You can get it from www.jsflyfishing.com. It is inexpensive and comes in multiple colors.

Anyway, great job on your Graf Spee!!!

Thanks Jetmodeler, and Mark.Smile

Mark: Thanks for the tip on the rigging, I'll have to check that out on my next build. Not sure which one to do first after the Spee though: Dragon 1/700 scale USS Hornet CV 12, or the Trumpeter 1/350 Prinz Eugen. I've got a MK 1 wood deck for that kit, and also for the Revell Bismarck I have in the stash.

Oh yeah, I didn't treat the deck at all.........just a thin mist of Testor's dull coat to seal it. What you see is what you get in these wood deck kits. On the Bismark, and Prinz Eugen kits, not only do you get enough pre-cut wood deck sections to do the entire model, but they also include a substantial amount of PE for radars, ladders, stairways etc. They aren't cheap, but I think they really make the model come alive.Big Smile

Thanks Manny, and Anthony.

I paid around 40.00 at Hobby Easy. Pricey yes, but you can't beat the look! The pieces are self adhesive backed, and they really fit well. Make sure you buy the correct one, as they have multiples of classes. In other words, they have one for the Academy Graf Spee, and one for the Trumpeter Graf Spee. HTH.
