Saw a ship model the other day set inside a section of clear acrylic tubing with clear flush end caps. The tube sat on a cradle made of wood. The model was held in place with a couple studs screwed in from the bottom.

I second Ed's motion for Grandpa's Cabinets. A great guy to work with, send him the measurements and he will send you back exactly what you want at what I think is a very reasonable price. And when FedEx mangled the acrylic case on mine, he sent another one while he fought it out with them over the damages - now that, my friends, is service.

Have you considered using an aquarium as a display case? They're already assembled and often include an appropriately-sized light fixture.

I found a 40 gallon "breeder" tank at a local fish shop for about $80. It's was nearly a perfect fit for my 1/350th Admiral Kuznetsov.
