PE and AM for Trumpeter's HMS Hood in 1/350
Posted by GregFK on Thursday, July 22, 2010 11:29 AM

Hi all,

Long time lurker and rare poster here.

I really like the look of the 1/350 HMS Hood released by Trumpeter and would love to make it my next big project. My question is what are the best AM pieces or PE sets released for this kit. I have seen the Lion Roar set for the Bismarck and wonder if similar is available for the Hood. If not what are some good options?

Any and all help that you could provide would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Greg

A lot depends on what your priorities are for a given model.  Are you looking for the ultimate in detail without regard to ease of use?  Do you want significant detail with more user friendly bits? Is price no object?

White Ensign Models makes a great set for Hood along with corrected turrets.  Gold Medal Models also makes a good set of PE for the basics and a supplementary set for even greater detail.  As for quality of materials and ease of installation and reasonableness of price I would go with either of them.  Other companies make sets for this ship as well.  You can go to WEM's website or GMM's website and see the pictures of the sets.   Also try FreeTime Hobbies on the web and go to their accessories section to view the various options.

There are after market gun barrel makers to choose from as well and they can be seen on the FreeTime site.

Hi,

Thanks for the prompt and concise reply. I have taken a look at some of the options you mention and they all seem like they would do the job. Although I did fail to see a version from White Ensign that had corrected turrets.

In my searching I also found a version made by Lion Roar but it seems to be discontinued. Does anyone have any experience with the Lion Roar set? Does anyone know where a set may be procured?

Thanks again.

Cheers,

Greg

I did not mean to mislead you about the turrets.  They are not listed on the WEM site WITH the PE, rather they are listed separately with their 1/350 scale professional fittings and accessories.  When you look there you will note that they have the corrected turrets.   WS

Trumpeter also makes a set of corrected brass barrels, with and without blast bags.  Check Trumpeter-China's website for details.
