.  None of these are accurate interiors of the real thing, but fun to assemble.  Interestingly, if you look in the engineering spaces, there is no propeller shaft nor drive train in those areas!

It's because nuclear propulsion is "Magic".

The Congressional controversy was over the first Revell release of the USN George Washington, which featured 6 Polaris missile tubes.

No, it was an 8 tube Revell model that came out initially, exactly half of the 16 tubes actually installed.  This was corrected to 16 tubes in later versions.  see: http://www.steelnavy.com/revell%20GW.htm

The larger (and with more parts) Renwal models included the George Washington (with a modified hull to reflect her heritage as being a modified Skipjack class SSN design), the Ethan Allen (later class), the Thomas Jefferson (clear hull side version) and the Andrew Jackson (identical to the Allen kit).

see:  http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery/ss/ssbn-608/200-pg/pg-index.html  and http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery/ss/ssbn-608/200-mg/mg-index.html

All the models were 24 inches long  listed as 1/200 scale, while the real submarines varied in length.  When Renwal folded, Revell acquired the molds and re-released the Andrew Jackson.  None of these are accurate interiors of the real thing, but fun to assemble.  Interestingly, if you look in the engineering spaces, there is no propeller shaft nor drive train in those areas!

Division 6

The Type VIIC is now out of production.

I don't normally build ships, but this store had one last I was in there.

http://www.hillcountryhobby.com/index.html

The guy who runs the store is great. If you want to build the Type VIIC Give him a call or an email and if it is still there I am sure he will work something out with you.

Excuse me.. Is that an Uzi?

Yes, that's right, because Renwal let known the secret coil spring launch technology!

Those stupid stars are back, too.

The original model/boxing/cover art shows up on Ebay from time to time.  Search "Revell, vintage."

Look, but don't touch that Lindberg boat, it has bad reviews, to say the least.

Wow, these are getting large -- I think I mean "complicated" with many parts, not sure the wife would tolerate a 5 foot submarine in the living room, but I'll take a look !

Model Maniac

On top of that there is IJN I-53 with Kaitens 1:72 from Lindberg. At 150cm or 5' long, it's the biggest baddest submarine model available to date in this scale.

We've long ago established that this kit is bad,  but there is no need to beat a dead horse.

U-Boat type VIIC 1:72 is just 93cm (3') long. It's certainly not the "biggest baddest submarine model". There is Gato 1:72 which is 132cm long. On top of that there is IJN I-53 with Kaitens 1:72 from Lindberg. At 150cm or 5' long, it's the biggest baddest submarine model available to date in this scale. Interior details are up to you to add. And if money is not the problem then U-Boat 1:32 from Andreas will be the ultimate choice. I think it has interior details.

Also, if you have links to killer cutaway aircraft carriers, I'll take'em.

As Mr. T would say "I pity the fool who'd try to build a cutaway aircraft carrier." Now that would be a true bucket of worms.

Revell-Germany has re-released the classic 1/253 Polaris sub, Abe Lincoln:

http://www.megahobby.com/polarisnuclearsubmarinewithinteriorcutaway1-253revellgermany.aspx

As I recall, one of those kits, the Revell or the Renwal raised a bit of a Congressional furor for showing the secrets of our newest strategic weapon, even though most of the interior was made up.

Well, open the link I posted earlier and you'll see one at least on eBay. I'd pay $ 30 inc. ship for it.

Hey Steve welcome. I think the kit you did as a kid was probably the USS Andrew Jackson SSBN in 1/200 scale. You can still find this kit from time to time on oldmodelkits.com. In fact there are currently 2 on this site.

http://www.oldmodelkits.com/index.php?page=1&cat=Military Ship&searchtext=submarine

There is also a german type XXI WW2 sub in 1/44 scale. Furthermore, if the site doesn't have it you can email the guy and he will find it for you eventually. Hope this info helps you out.

The Type VIIC is now out of production.

Keep an eye over on Hyperscale in the ship section they are always up for sale, I got one about 2 months ago after finding out they where OOP.

Places to look for models and supplies, just for starts.

Squadron, Tower Hobbies, Mega Hobbies, Model Expo.

You could always get a Gato and scratch build the interior.

On the hanger deck of the USS Midway they have a clear acrylic 1/48 scale model of the carrier, very impressive.

Where do you go to find stuff --- ebay?

What is the go-to place for model kits?

I did a quick look for 1/72 viic, don't see a kit. Will dig some more.

Also, if you have links to killer cutaway aircraft carriers, I'll take'em.

I did one of those too, long ago, and it was quite inspiring (circa 1970 something again).

I have built the 72nd scale  Revell VIIC with 3 CMK interiors (torpedo/control room/engine room). Expect to pay more than 3 hundred dollars to get this material including paint and supplies.

Its a great deal of work, a serious model, and could probably keep you busy for a year or more. I bought my CMK interiors from Squadron as they were the only ones that had them.

I hope to have photos up some time in the future. The CMK interiors are stunning and not particularly easy to work with.

I've built the Gato OOB.

Steve, welcome to the forum. Unfortunately, those kinds of kits just aren't popular enough anymore.

We old far7s get misty eyed remembering visible V8's, men, women, P-51s and that submarine.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Renwal-ANDREW-JACKSON-POLARIS-LAUNCHING-NUCLEAR-SUB-/270610195173

However, for the crazy among us, it certainly is a good project and a good place to start would be here:

Good luck!

I think I had a cutaway nuclear submarine when I was a kid (o let's say 1978?).

I want a big huge messy one with 100,000 parts... insane detail, not for weak of heart, etc, etc...
