Simpler explanation perhaps?

Dragon's Tico and Spruance kits share the same hull and deck parts don't they? The Tico kit came first and has the offset as depicted in the pic above, which was inherited by the Spruance kit.

Are you looking at the VERTREP box?   My DML SpruCan boxed as the USS Ingersoll has white VERTREP boxes offset to starboard.   Weapon warning circles are red & white arcs.    See Subfixer's photo of the Paul Foster.  It too has the VERTREP box offset to starboard,  probably to clear the projections on the port edge.

Then again, photos at NAVSOURCE show configurations both on the centerline and offset to starboard.

Research the subject and time period of your model.

I wish that I could help you, it's been quite a while since I was aboard the Spruance or any of her sisterships. But have you tried checking out any Ticonderoga class cruisers? They have the same hull, machinery and gun placements and are still active.

I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

USS Spruance DML

Just got the kit the other day and noticed a some flaws mostly minor till now. On the fantail the white lines marking out the MK 45 5" naval rifle concussion zone is badly off center. All views of this area on the model instruction sheet show the lines off center just like the actual casting. Having worked on Spruance personally, taking part in the removal of all the toxic and recycleable materials and sensitive equipment, I know this was not the case. The gangway was just behind the aft rifle when we were stripping her for sinking, so I know this is wrong having come to work everyday seeing the lines daily. However, DML's USS Kidd has the correct placement of these lines. I worked on all 4 Kidd's during the Tiawan conversion and know that the lines are centered on the gun. Does anyone know of an earlier configuration in which these lines were off center of the rifle? If so why ? The Kit is in the 1980's post VLS upgrade and the pictures from back then show the lines centered.
