Revell 1/96 USS Kearsarge
Posted by CampbellM on Thursday, July 29, 2010 12:10 AM

Anybody got any idea of where I might find a kit of this ship? I remember reading a great National Geographic article years ago about the battle between the Kearsarge and the Alabama off the coast of Cherbourg, France. Now that I'm getting back into models and working on a Constitution  (1/96), I'd like to get my hands on a Kearsarge, but it looks like neither Revell here or in Germany is currently manufacturing it. Do I just need to keep trawling the 'net hoping one shows up somewhere?

Anthony,

I can't make heads or tails of that site. It looks like it's just a bunch of kit reviews, not a place actually selling anything, at least from what I could see.

Here's one - but take a deep breath before you look at the price:  http://www.oldmodelkits.com/index.php?detail=18080&cat=Military Ship&manu=Revell

Revell Germany just reissued it a few years ago.  I suspect examples of it are knocking around various places for more reasonable prices.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

Hi, I have Revell 05603 USS Kearsarge 1:96 unopened. It has sat in my loft for the last 4 or 5 years and my son never got round to building her. He now has other interests, so the model is available. Where do you live so I can get an idea of postage costs.

Regards,

Nick.

As I recall, the re-issue kit was dropped by Revell Germany very quickly.

Much more quickly than the Alabama kit.

Was the USS Kearsarge kit so unpopular vs. CSS Alabama ?

I paid $56 dollars for the Revell CSS Alabama including shipping about three years ago. My LHS had the Kearsarge for $114 on sale. Its now gone.

I don't know where in the world you are based, but keep an eye out on Ebay UK for the Revell Germany re-issue- it is quite common here. Recent examples have sold for around £20-30. I got mine for £22.00 for example. The big Connie and Cutty Sark have been much more available in the UK over the decades and therefore usually go for less depending on how many are on ebay at one time. The Heller Victory though.... sheesh, I've never seen even part-builds go for less than about £50!

Kearsarge is much the better kit. I'd guess that most who owned one ended up owning the other....WAG!

I recently bought an original early-1960's USS Kearsarge on ebay for $110.00, around the same price I saw for the re-release several years ago. The prices are coming down.

I am certainly glad to see she went to a good home. I dropped out at around $75. That was a little too rich for my blood, especially with a stash as big as mine. Over the past several months I have seen three others going for $138,$127,and $81. Having more time than money,I'll be keeping my out for a bargain.

Will you be building this soon, or is it a stash addition? I would love to see a build documented here.

weasel,

I will build it but I am currently working on modifying the Revell CSS Alabama to as much of her true appearance as the kit will allow, such as raking the masts, resiting two of the 32-pounders aft, correcting the rail guns, and repositioning the deck furniture.  I am also working on the Heller Le Soleil Royal, modifying her extensively, such as opening the stern and quarter galleries, painting her ala Berain, and modifying the deck furniture. Finally, I am converting a plank-on-bulkhead kit of HMS Victory to a pre-Trafalgar configuration.  The Kearsarge will wait for a short while!

WOW! You make me feel like a slacker. I also have the Alabama in my closet. I'm finding myself more and more intrigued by the transition from sail to steam.I'm fascinated by the history these ships represent. What sources are you using on Alabama? The Anatomy of a Confederate Raider is on my watch list, but I understand there are a set of plans available also. Good luck on all those builds.

Richard,

I am using original drawings of Vessel 290 in the Hoole Special Collections Library, University of Alabama, and in C. G. Summersell, CSS Alabama, Univ. of Alabama, 1985.  The Upper Deck Plan and Profile Plan are available free online by performing a search for CSS Alabama deck plans.

Good luck!

Bill,

Thanks for the tips. When I left the hobby in the 60s,almost the only info was what came with the kit. Now there is so much out there, I'm thankful for help seperating the wheat from the chaff.

Richard,

My pleasure!  Having so much information, though, can be somewhat demoralizing when it shows how much work has to be done to build a kit more accurately! However, that is what the hobby is about, so . . . Toast
