Having spent some time looking at pictures of the deck planking over on the Modelwarships discussion board and some of the notes from the contributers to the design I can see why no butt ends were included on the deck planking.  Given the Kreigsmarines penchant for minimizing such things you would not see them.  I can understand why some modelers would want them but in scale you just wouldn't see them.  I keep going back and looking at this kit and am just amazed at how well it was done.  WS

Yeah, that's how long it takes me to put together an Eduard "weekend edition" kit! Big Smile

Dragon could probably release kits faster, but it would lead to wallet shock and cost more. They're trying to build it up without having to invest massively up front, I.E. the profits from one kit pay for the next one....

You'll probably see 2-3 major kit releases from Dragon per year from here on out; in this case a major release being first in class. I would separate the second CVL release (not planned yet, but fairly inevitable) out from the "major release" category. This is my attempt at forecasting and describing, not Dragons', and they may have other plans I'm not aware of.

To be accurate, we really have to say "that Dragon hasn't done... yet." Trumpeter has been releasing ship kits recently longer than Dragon, but Dragon has plenty in the pipeline; I would expect some sort of catalog parity within 2-3 years.

2-3 years is now an eternity n the modeling world...

The kit has hit Thai market. It's one of my 50 ships waiting to be built.

How much does it retail for in Thailand? If it was cheaper I might get my fiancée to pick one up for me, if she can stop watching Lin Ping that is.

This one is damn expensive in Thailand. My pre-order price is 4,800 Baht or about $150! Retail price is 25% more! You'll be better off buying it at home. Let your fiancee continue watching Lin Ping.

Anyone who's got this kit may consider PE railing upgrade set from Cyber-Hobby I saw selling for $19.95 on one site. There's also brass barrels of 12x150mm guns from Aber selling for $11.65

That, plus in my opinion Trumpeter comes from the "good enough" school as opposed to the "let's knock their socks off" school.

Ditto...Trumpy has never claimed to have better moldings or engineering that surpasses DML..the one strength Trumpy has is the different and eclectic variety of offerings they produce that DML doesn't...If the the same subject is done by Trumpy and DML, bet your bottom dollar that DML will be the more accurate and better engineered kit...

I don't think it is likely. The test shots cost money.. if they changed things to add detail they'd have to run another test shot to see if they needed to make any changes. For example, with the Scharnhorst, there were certain splinter shields that did not survive the test shot; they were either damaged or warped, so they were bulked up a bit.

In reading this thread about how good this model is molded, etc, a thought flashed thru my thick skull that made me wonder "What if?"  Dragon is making this top class model in 1/350, and it is selling for about $125.00.  OK, Trumpeter is planning to release the 1/200 Arizona, and it is pre-selling at about $200.00.  Now my question is, What if Trumpeter has been waiting for the Scharnhorst to be released to see what the newest level of detail is going to be, so they can one-up Dragon with the Arizona?   Yeah, yeah, I know, it is just a dream.  But the Test Shot was a little simplistic in some areas, so I am hoping Trumpeter will surprise us.  A lot of you people on here are more informed about all the goings on in these companies, and how they try to top each other to gain an advantage in the market, so what do you think of this possibility?  And I realize those of you who may really be in-the-know probably can't say anything anyway, but I am wondering.....

The UPS guy left just a while ago and I have inventoried the kit just delivered.  This is truly an exceptional model that raises the bar.  I haven't taken any sprues out of the plastic covering yet but the detailing looks fabulous.  Oddly though it appears that the deck planking doesn't have any butt ends (for most of it anyway).  When I get it out of the plastic I will look more closely...

However, the rest of the parts are just gorgeous with lots and lots of detail.  Even the crew figures are marvelous.  The ships boats are nicely detailed and a good amount of photo etch is included.  It looks like a project to take up MONTHS of full time work to do this right.

Manstein's revenge

DML new release:

Some reviewers are calling it the best plastic ship model ever produced...

Sprue Brothers has the kit for $125. Add the Cyber Hobby PE railing for another $20. Sounds like a lot of kits for a moderate price.

We will have a kit on the way to our PE designer tomorrow or Monday, and will have a full-blown set ready within the month.

Cheers,

One of my favorite ships. I think she's one of the most beautiful ships to be put to sea. This might be the one I really consider if I ever build a ship again.
