In WWII, what was the numbering of the 5" gun mounts? For instance, a Cleveland-class light cruiser had six 5" mounts. Was it:
#1-forward, #2-port forward, #3-starboard forward, #4-port aft, #5 starboard aft, #6-aft?
Thanks for your help.
Chris
As a guess, the forward one if Mount 51, first forward starboard side is 52, first forward port 53, next starboard 54, next port 55, and mount 56 would be aft.
What would it be for the Atlanta Class? The second group Oakland Sub-class is pretty straight-forward since their six turrets are inline, but the First and Third group (I think the Third were also) had two waist turrets about two-thirds back.
Mount 51 would be the forward 5" gun, between the forward superstructure and the #2 triple turret. Mount 52 is on the port side and Mount 53 on the starboard side forward. Mount 54 is port side and Mount 55 is starboard side aft. Mount 56 is the aft 5" gun.
The triple 6" gun turrets numbered for to aft would be Mount 61. 62, 63, 64.
What would it be for the Atlanta Class?
Fore to aft on six turret ships 51, 52, 53 then 54 55 56.
Eight turret ships, the port wing would be even, so 54, 55 for starboard wing, then 56 57 58.
