Another information request, old British Balsa ship Ark Royal
Posted by LMN118 on Monday, August 23, 2010 9:55 AM

Hi there,

here to pick your brains again. I've just purchased a kit from evilBay. I'll admit I purchased it as a possible resale as I have no clue what to do with a balsa ship.

The kit is a Blue Riband Series Ark Royal in balsa produced by a company called Southern Junior aircraft company.

I haven't received the model yet, so date as unknown, however by the look of the box and the printing I'm guessing perhaps the 60's.

Only other information I've found is that the company Southern Junior was located in Brighton, UK. Specifically 89-90 London Road, Brighton, England. That and Blue Riband refers to a decoration given to ships for making the Atlantic crossing.

We believe the box has a printed tag on it of 30'7 or 30 shillings 7 pence. I had to ask my mother about this as it is before my time but she believes that is a significant amount for a model.

Any thoughts and information greatly appreciated.

30 shillings was 1 1/2 pounds, which back in the 60's was worth about 20 pounds now. Depends on the model, but certainly not cheap.
