USN 2nd Fleet is riding out storm at home
Posted by subfixer on Thursday, September 2, 2010 10:00 PM

If you ever wanted to see a lot of combat ships in one place, now is the time to do it. Hurricane Earl has provided us with the treat of having 61 ships of all types in port at the same time. Instead of sending the ships out to sea to weather the storm there, the Navy has seen fit to bring them all into Norfolk and to let them ride it out pierside.

Traffic on Tuesday morning after the Labor Day weekend will be absolute murder.

What costs more? Having the ships at sea or having them tied up inactive at pierside?

Being out at sea and burning fuel is a lot more expensive but it builds character and saltiness. Hiding out in harbor is for wussies.    ;)

Especially when you are 50 feet down, ehh, dolphin boy?

I'd suspect the watch on deck might not get so enthusiastic.

BTW go solve the trivia quiz, I'm tired of winning.Pirate

Mr. bondo, I'll remind you that I fix 'em (subs) and don't ride them. I was a surface guy in my day and got salty the honest way.

True indeed and I only can claim that I trip into the back of a sailboat now and then...

But what about that trivia stumper?

I suspect pre world war one. Your thoughts?

I wasn't aware of the Russian (he did say Russian, not Soviet?) Navy ever sank any warship with a submarine. I haven't got any idea whatsoever.

edit: I just checked the queatin; he asked "Russian or Soviet".

Heh.... this reminds of a phone call we got the other day.  We're based in Whidbey Island, WA, but assigned to an Air Wing on the east coast (read, Oceana).  So one of the guys from CAG staff called, and asked who our "Hurrevac" (hurricane evacuation) officer was.

Me: "Uh, we don't get hurricanes here."

CAG Staffer: "You don't?"

Me: "No.  Pacific Northwest and whatnot."

CAG Staffer: "Oh. So, you don't have a Hurrevac guy, do you?"

Me: "Nope."

CAG Staffer: "Oh, OK. Bye!"
