Now, for the question . . . the Wilhelm Bauer represents a Type XXI that was modified for research purposes long after the war. It does not represent a Type XXI during the war. The VIID was a minelayer. The other two, the VIIC and the VIIC/41 have equal levels of detail. I recommend each of the Type VII's equally.
Now, for a more refined question, between the Revell VIIC/41 (80-5100), the one with 107 parts, the U-Boot Wilhelm Bauer (80-5072), the one with 50 parts, and the U-Boot VII C ( 80-5038), the one with 89 parts, all in 1/144 scale, which is the best? Which looks the best and which one has the best railings? I have heard that many of these kinds of kits have very oversized railings, is that true with any or all of these kits? thanks
I agree with the Revell 1/144 scale U-Boats. They make the Type XXI, VIIC, VIIC/41, and VIID. The price ranges are very reasonable, the detail exquisite, and they fit into most houses quite easily. Dragon and Trumpeter have also released 1/144 scale diesel boats, the best being the Chinese Type 33.
Revell has done some new 1/144 Type VII U boats, a C and D I believe. Those are supposed to be well detailed and in the size range you want.

If i didn't have too many models going already, I'd snap up the Revell Type 21. It seems pretty accurate, and it looks WAY cool!

Sorry for the confusion, I should have said that the maximum size doesn't really matter, I'm rearranging my stuff, so I can always make space for something, and actually, looking at my area, a big model would be pretty cool!
AFV club and revell both have Type VIIs in 1/350th that are very nice... there's a bunch of nice, new Type IXs on the market too in that scale. They're a little smaller than 9" but build up very nice.
I'm not sure about any of the 1/144 offerings.

I do not think any of the IX class were painted in camouflauge as they were distant seas cruisers unlikely to be used in the Arctic or Med where some coloring would be done.
I am no expert but i have heard that the Revell kits are very good. I have been trying to get hold of the 72nd scale Type VIIc for ages.

Ok, I haven't built a ship model since I was six, so I really don't know much about the subject. I'm gonna go ahead and ask a REALLY basic question: What is the best U-boat model on the market? I want one that will look great when finished, something to look nice next to my aircraft and armor models. I would like an easier build, but I'm not a terrible modeler, so I can do work. As far as scale, anything that would be between 12 and 18 inches long. I know that some were a little more colorful, so something that can be made to catch your eye would be awesome. Thanks in advance!!!
