Omaha Beach Destroyers question
Posted by stikpusher on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 1:23 AM

I am rereading Stephen Ambrose's book D-Day,and earlier in the evening read the chapter regarding the actions of the destroyers off Omaha beach. From the ships named in the chapter (USS Satterlee, USS Shubrick, USS Frankford, USS Carmick, and USS McCook) I did some web research. All were Gleaves class destroyers, some round  bridge, some square bridge. Seeing how the Benson and Gleaves classes were extremely similar, what would be the better of the Dragon 1/350 destroyer kits to use to model one of these gallant ships?

I don't know which would be closer to the specific destroyers in question, but the Gleaves kits that have been released include the Buchanan and Livermore

To follow-up on Tracy's post

Check the armament section for the Gleaves/Livermore sub-class at destroyerhistory.org

Research your potential subjects for their armament load-out during the period of interest.    The '45 Buchanan may be closer to your desired configuration

You two gents are the ones I was hoping would point me in the right direction. Thank you for the assistance. The few photos I could find of each ship around that time period showed late war AA configuration. And I had completely forgotten about the Cybermodeler 1945 USS Buchanan. That looks like the perfect kit for the round bridge ones such as USS Carmick.

Are there any conversion items out there for a square bridge Gleaves?

You're welcome.

Admiralty Model Works has just released a square-bridge conversion set for the Dragon kits.

It made its debut at the IPMS Nats last month.  Extremely well done.
