Das Schnellboot
Posted by Bocks Suv on Thursday, October 14, 2010 9:44 AM

I just got an old Airfix/MPC 1/72 E-Boat kit and would love to detail her with some P-E. I see that there are    P-E sets for the S-100 version (sleeker, armoured) but nothing yet for my early version. So... is there a P-E kit for E-boat and where? And If I just went for the S-100 set , could most of it be readily adapted for the E boat?  I'm not a huge stickler for historical accuracy.  In fact I find it hard to believe that in all the photos I've seen, this boat is a dirty white. Thoughts??

No PE for the Airfix. A number of folks make S-100 PE now but they include PE railings(can use), depth charge rack(can use), armored bridge flaps(cannot use), 20mm & 37mm adders(can use the 20mm).

From an old article on accurizing the Airfix, the main gripe is the depth charge rack is very thick. I can photocopy and send you the article. Just send me an PM and I will scan and email.

There is a blue paint scheme for the 1940 Norway invasion but that involves painting a big swastika on the cabin roof. Do not know if that may upset some folks.

56 hits and only your response. Weird. Anyway thanks for the info. I'd like to see any info you may have on  the blue version and anything on the depth charge rack. The kit's parts do look pretty clunky.  Here's my email, gtmail77@yahoo.com  So in your opinion, how much od the S-100 PE would be even remotely useable (perhaps not 100% accurate, but cool looking) on the E-boot?

That whole swastika thing is an interesting topic.  I'm pretty sure that no American/Allied model builders build German (or Jap) kits in support of the Axis agenda.  It would be to honor the history, design, technology or the might of some of the most destructive weapons man has ever created.  At shows there are hundreds of built Nazi kits on display and I've never seen anyone get upset.  However even the best Nazi build makes me see beyond the "toy" and into the truth, history and deadly impact  of the real machines.  I should post this question on the Forum and see what people say.

Probably interested parties looking for photos of a model rather than people that have any info for you - like me!! Good luck with the AM goodies,

PE for that kit is one of our long-term projects, if we can ever get close to caught up on our current ones. The S-100 class boats were universally painted Schnellbootweiss, a dirty off-white that we have accurately matched in our Colourcoats enamels. Some of the earlier boats, as represented by the Airfix kit, wore patterned multi-color camouflage.

Thanks for the info. I guess you're into making P-E parts; if that's the case do you know when a set for the Airfix early E-boat will be available?   And if I elected to instead use the current Eduard S-100 set, how much of it can be adapted with modest accuracy, in your opinion? Thx

If you can scan that image of the depth charge racks, I can start refining the parts. Send it to gtmail77@yahoo.com when you get a chance.  I've  seen some some variatins where the depth charges are just held down with a series of cables ( I assume  they were charges and not oil/fuel drums)  and another where the rack is hold ing a few round water mines. So many choices, I guess it becomes builder's choice. Danke!

PE for that kit? I would hazard a guess that it will be at least a year before we can get to it, given that we're trying to keep up with the new kits that are coming out. I'm not familiar with the Eduard PE set for the 1/72 S-100. We do our own (PE 7201) that would likely provide some useful details, but I can't  tell you how much of it.
