1/72 Scale ships\boats

Selection in this scale is very limited because of size and price. Example: a WW2 Fletcher class DD in 1/72 would be about 5 feet long. And they only get bigger from there. Most of whats available in this scale are PT's, E-boats, etc. Although there is a 1/72 Corvette available and Revell Germany is just coming out with a 1/72 U-boat most of us have on pre-order (and are anxiously awaiting).

As for prices you have to look around some. It all depends on who's got what and when. Example: The new U-boat I have seen on e-bay from a guy in the Netherlands for twice the pre-order price (they are availble in europe now). However my pre-order company says they won't have them till about March 10th. So I wait.

The first kits that pop into mind, are the monogram/revell PT-109 elco boat. It can be detailed very nicely with after market stuff. Airfix has a 1/72 RAF rescue launch and Vosper torpedo boat too I think. They are reasonably priced and may be up your alley. I'm sure there's much more to be had out there, good luck.

You have a few choices.

The best kit out there in 1/72 is the Revell/Germany S-100 Class Schnellboot. Affordable at $20, it builds up nicely and is 90% accurate.

Then you've got a Tamiya Vosper (modern), Airfix Vosper(WW2), Airfix Rescue Launch, Airfix E-boat (actually an S-34 class), the Revell PT-109 (and it's permutations) the upcoming Revell Type VII U-boat, and the Amati Type VIIB (pricey).

From there, everything goes rapidly downhill with 1/72 vacuform kits from Combat Models.

That's about it.

You might wish to review several of the recent HMCS Snowberry "threads" posted in this forum for access to worthwhile links on corvette color schemes. While there, check out the small fortune in obsessive-compulsive photoetched detailing available for the corvette. You can just about end up with a complete vessel (not necessarily a corvette) with the flag sheet from your model as the only part from your original model purchase!

You might also be interested in viewing the Tupolev G-5 Russian Torpedo Boat kit in 1/72 scale by Interavia. It's available from Army Book (www. armybook.com) at $9.95. That price sounds good, but they add some "mysterious" tarrifs, shipping, etc. to make it somewhat "pricey."

I haven't built one, but would be interested in anyone's opinion of the kit.

If you can post a photo of Saucy, I can tell you the colors and paint scheme. I looked and DON'T have one, can you believe it?? I've got more than 5000 ship photos and hundreds of Flower Class, but not that one.

There is an organisation in Australia called Taskforce 72 and their members have several "partial kits" of a host of ships both war canoes and merchamtmen.
I am not sure of there web address but if you enter Taskforce 72 you should find it.
The kits contain a GRP hull and various fittings in plastic GRP and white metal.
If you are unable to find their web site let me know and I will rattle a few cages.

www.taskforce72.org is what you are looking for. The kits are pretty pricey and leave a lot to be scratch built if that is the way you want to go.
