USS Barb question
Posted by Jeeves on Thursday, November 18, 2010 7:43 AM

Hello all...

I have been pretty much a plane and tank builder to date and would like to try my hand at something afloat...more so underwater.  I was looking at the 1/144 Trumpeter Gatos and wasn't sure which version to buy if I wanted to try my hand at Gene Fluckey's boat..

I know it was laid down in June of '41 so the 1941 version would make sense...but Fluckey wasn't her captain until '44. I imagine at that point she must have been refitted...which makes me wonder if the 1944 model would reflect these refits better?  Any help would be greatly appreciated...

The '44 version would be a better choice as a starting point.

The '41 GATO includes the high enclosed bridge & conning tower.    By '44 the conning tower on most USN submarines had beed drastically cut down.     Go to http://www.navsource.org/ for the best photo archives of USN ships on the web.   From there navigate to SUBMARINES and GATO for a listing of subs.   Select BARB and you will see some pix of the BARB in 1944
