Anthony... yes, that's what they look like, but they have a hand crank about halfway up the column But the way they are rigged in the instruction photos makes no sense, I think they might be wrong. Anyone out there have a clear diagram of how the pulleys and ropes would be arranged and how the lifeboat should be attached?

The Wellin Davit was turn of the century technology,  but it has been modified and improved.   It was widely used in WWII and after.       Unlike the radial davit noted above,  the Wellin's davit arms are cranked outboard on a rocker-screw.   The following link is to the Titanic Research & Modeling Associatation's site and shows photos & diagrams of the davit and operation

You must be refering to a radial davit. This davit was maneuvered by twisting their base sockets, so that when a life boat was hoisted with block and tackle, the life boat could be swung inboard  Thus, the boat would not hang over the side of the ship. Hope this helps.

Montani semper liberi !   Happy modeling to all and every one of you.

Davit info?

Newbie here, first post... and I have a question I hope someone will be able to help me with.

I'm building the Artesania Latina "SANSON" tug, and I have a question. I'm fairly new to ship building and don't have much technical knowledge... but looking at the photos in the instructions, the way the lifeboat davits are rigged looks to me like they couldn't possibly work as illustrated. I tried googling for info, and did manage to learn that these are "Welin" davits, circa late 1800s-early 1900s, but couldn't find a rigging diagram.

So... basic questions: How did these davits work? How were the lifeboats swung out over the side of the tug to be lowered? Did the davits pivot? Also, is there a diagram of the davit lines out there somewhere that I could use as a reference?

Thanks!
