New artifacts that were collected from the shipwreck believed to be the flagship, QUEEN ANN'S REVENGE, of the notorious pirate, Black Beard, will be put on display next Friday at the North Carolina Museum of History, at Raleigh, N.C. These artifacts were salvaged at Beaufort Inlet, where it is believed the QUEEN ANN'S REVENGE ran aground in 1718, either by accident or design, when Black Beard sought to double cross his crew.
The QUEEN ANN'S REVENGE is the second authentic pirate ship located in North America. The first was the WHYDAH, wrecked off Cape Cod near Truro, MA, when Captain Charles Bellamy tried to sail to Boston to visit an old girl friend, who was stoodup when Bellamy and some of his crew perished in a April 1718 storm.
The lengthy and complete story of the conservation and restoration of the QUEEN ANN'S REVENGE artifacts can be read at the web site, Queen Ann's Revenge, QAR Conservation Lab, Conservation Report, September 2010. All comments and questions should be directed to: wendy.welsh@ncdcr.gov
