When is a vessel not a ship ? When it,s a boat !

The boat I speak of is the NEW "AIRFIX"  SEVERN class RNLI rescue boat . This is AIRFIX kit # 07280 . This 1/72 kit is An AIRFIX standard in one way -a four piece hull ! Not to worry , though , It FALLS together ! This is unique in the aspect that it has a full interior in it ! YUP , a full interior as seen in the DISCOVERY channel show where they showed one being given the rollover test . Yup ! it popped right back upright ! It,s all there ! Handrails, controls and on and on . The only thing I had some problems with (she,s in the test fit at this stage). The paint callouts were ALL HUMBROL ! The instruction sheet was clear to me (a graduate engineer and a PHD in vessel design) Now for the average builder I would recommend studying the instructions numerous times, then , Proceed slowly . Like their other 1/72 boats, it requires skill ,  patience and lots of time -outs.The result of course ,will be a boat that is NOT commonly seen here in the STATES ! Is it worth the price , well considering they (AIRFIX/HORNBY) will give sixty pence of each kit sold to help maintain the ROYAL NATIONAL LIFEBOAT INSTITUTE !  IT IS ! This gives anyone frequenting those waters a chance at life if their vessel founders or goes down . Do I recommend it to level 3 or 4 modelers ,YOU BET !! You can be assured that it will certainly look different on your shelf . Check it out , OH , I forgot to tell you , they have included a good color chart and color photos of one of the lifeboats to help you out too ! The DECALS appear on register and delicate, when I get there I will let you know . thats all for now.     tankerbuilder

My major model shipbuilding interest is Great Lakes shipping, especially the bulk carriers (sometimes called ore boats).  These ships are colloquially called "boats" around the lakes, even though some are 1000 foot long and enormous!

Naval Aviators refer to Aircraft Carriers as "The Boat".

Hello , DON : Hey guy,I grew up half my young life in BUFFALO,N.Y. Yep ,I know about those "boats" As far as the comment about someone calling aircraft carriers "boats"I spent two tours on carriers and never heard that ! Now when you want to talk about big boats DON is right . those puppies are BIG .  When I was much younger I got to see and touch the EDMUND FITZGERALD !! Now in those days SHE was the cat,s MEOW . The boat I referred to is of course unique to the U.K. and this is as it should be . The shores there aren,t ,in most instances , friendly to seagoing craft if you get in a fix and have to go over the side . The Institute has a proud history going way back to the days of rowing wherries. They would build them and their storage house up high and when the call came they would jump in, slide down the ways and as soon as water was under the keel start digging in until everyone was rowing their hearts out literally . Remember someone,s life was at stake . The history was and is a proud one and I just thought I would write about this model because of the unique subject matter .        tankerbuilder

This would be classed as a boat. My scratch built Nutshell pram that was built on my front porch four years ago is a boat, verses an ocean going vessel should be considered a ship, even if it sails on the Great Lakes. Now that gasoline prices are going over $4, it looks like I'll be sailing closer to home at Bell Rapids on the Snake River, as pictured here, rather than on picturesque Redfish Lake in Central Idaho's Sawtooth Mountains.

Montani semper liberi !   Happy modeling to all and every one of you.

If it fits on a ship, it's a boat, If it carries a boat, it's a ship? Captain
