Sawfish emblem?
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, March 11, 2011 3:26 PM

I am researching the U-96, one of the more successful  U-boats during WW2 (27 ships sunk on 11 wartime patrols; 5 more damaged or written off)...I have seen references showing that it sported a sawfish emblem on the side of the conning tower...

 RealU-96.jpg

Some refs say it is red, while others cite blue or green...I do know that in addition to it being a personal emblem of U-96, that it was also used as a flottila emblem as well, possibly confusing the color issue...anyone out there with any intel on this?

Manny,

Some info here...I could not download the article but from what I have been able to find out the fish was green. I guess if no color picture is to be found it's up to you.

Manny, from what I've seen indicated by both Wikipedia and a source on ww2incolor.com the U-96's emblem was green...must be a dark green. When the captain of the U-96 was promoted to command the 9th flotilla, it was used as its insignia but it was painted blue.

...it wasn't good return fire...

Considering it was coming from a freighter that was already down by the bows and listing at 26 degrees, it wasn't bad...
