Heller Reale de France
Posted by Don Stauffer on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 3:15 PM

I am starting the Reale de France.  I have built several Heller sailing ships and never had a problem with the instructions, but I seem to be having problems with this one.  There is only one page of English instructions.  In the portion about erecting the masts and the rigging, it merely says everything is self-explanatory :-)

This may be true if you are experienced building galleys and galleases, but the rigging is sure different that the ships I am familiar with.  Does anyone know of a better translation of these instructions, or how to prepare what I would call the shrouds and their blocks? I cannot seem to find the color of the thread to use for these, and cannot decipher the length they should be. The method of attaching the blocks to the shrouds is not clear to me.

I have a few books on French, and a French to English dictionary, but a number of  the terms in the instructions are not in them (probably uncommon nautical terms).

Don,

I believe I have the Aurora/Heller kit that has instructions in English.  I will check tomorrow and confirm.  I also have the French version as well. If I do, I can get it copied and send if you want?  Talk to you soon.

Thanks, Mac.  There are some pages that seem pretty clear, but it is mainly the rigging pages.  I will look through and identify the pages that confuse me.  My email is stauffer@usfamily.net- contact me there to take discussion out of the group.

Hello.  Don't know if you still need them or not, but I've got a copy of the English Aurora relase instructions that I'd be glad to mail to you.  Just PM me your mailing address and I'll get them out to you.

Forgot to mention, the rigging instructions are pretty clear..I've had the same experience with similar Heller ship instructions.

Here's a link to a model that sounds well researched.

http://modelshipworld.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=7224&start=0

He mentions the Musee de la Marine as a source of drawings. I went to their site and it seems like there's at least a lot of contact info.

The instructions for the Heller Victory are a disaster, and full of errors to boot. Mine is the Imai rebox however, so it came with a second set in Japanese that were MUCH better.Tongue Tied

So I'd rely on sourcing out other info.
