I was poking around looking for something else on the web and stumbled on this tidbit - the Moshulu, subject of Eric Newby's excellent The Last Grain Race, is still around! In Philadelphia, as a floating restaurant, of all things: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moshulu

So I don't have so many silly question about the rigging of the Pamir, I have order Underhill's book Masting & Rigging: The Clipper Ship & Ocean Carrier. I hope this will give me the answers I need. Got a good deal on it for only $28.00 + shipping.

Spelunko Bob - sorry for the delay. Dug out my copy of Windjammer by Eric Newby, a photo essay of the last Grain Race from Europe to Australia in 1938-39 and the ship he sailed on, Moshulu. It has some pics of what you are after (I think) as well as Pamir, which was a close sister ship and part of Gustav Erikson's fleet.  I sent you a pm so I can e-mail you the pics.

Pamir: Jarvis winch
Posted by Spelunko Bob on Saturday, March 26, 2011 12:10 AM

Hello all,

I was doing research concerning the Jarvis winch and how it was rigged.

What I have gathered so far is that it was connected the the first lower yards. In some descriptions, the cable was rigged to Jarvis winch directly from the yards and others the cable ran to the mast aft on it and then run down to the Jarvis winch. I believe the second case to be true. My concern is that I can not find out where the cables ran from the yard to the aft mast. particularly the course yard. Any ideas about this.

Also were the cable, when attached to the Jarvis winch, connect first to the larger or smaller part of the conical drums?

Thank you.
