Lindberg USS Constitution or Revell Connie?
Posted by nfafan on Monday, April 18, 2011 10:42 PM

Hello all,

Looking for a weekend-build Constitution kit. Have the 1/96th Revell to build, so don't need a masterpiece - just something that "looks it".

I have found a smallish Revell Connie kit in a Hobby Lobby - maybe this is their 1/150th kit?? or 1/196th??

Anyway, boxart shows the Andrew Jackson figurehead - but also appears to show that the top-deck guns have their carriages molded to the surface. Not nice to have to paint these.

Meanwhile, Lindy is selling what is probably an ex-Pyro Connie in supposed 1/450th scale. Limited photo boxart shows that it apparently has no sails and shows what looks to be seperate (and out of scale) deck guns. Would make for easier painting.

If I am wrong in my assumption over Revell boxart showing molded-in-place deck gun carriages - please advise.

Also please advise as to the Lindberg Constitution kit if ou have handled one. I built a bunch of Pyro's in my youth, so I am not afraid of a simple little kit.

Thanks tons in advance!

I have another idea- the La Flore now sold as the Lindberg "Jolly Roger".

It's a nice kit, on a par with the smaller Constitution which does have molded on gun carriages.

The 1/196 Revell Constitution has the carronade carriages molded to the deck.  On mine I painted the deck first and then masked around the carriages for a neat paint job.  Not hard, just time consuming.

The chaser and stern long guns are molded separately and are actually harder to paint because the guns and carriages are molded in one piece.

Just so happens;  I have an unopened Lindy Jolly Roger/Lafiore/Flying Dutchman I just snagged this past weekend at HobbyLobby…

I was standing there at Hoblob with the smaller Revell Connie in hand, but the idea of the molded-on gun carriages – from what I could tell from the boxart – was not great.

So I snagged the JRoger instead.  I have since read some unkind reviews of the kit and considering that I REALLY wanted to build the Constitution anyway – I figure I’d return the JRoger and either get the Revell Connie they had or look for the small (probably ex-Pyro) Lindy Connie.

Anyway, if anyone has any hands-on experience with the Lindy Constitution, I’d appreciate it!

The Lindberg kit is the old Pyro model.  If you really want a USS Constitution, go with the Revell 1/196 version and paint the molded-on carronade carriages.

The Lindberg "Jolly Roger" is a nice generic kit of a French frigate of the late 18th century period, but whether or not it actually represents "La Flore" is anybody's guess.

Right, I didn't mean to imply that the La Flore had any relationship to the Constitution, other than it's a frigate from about the same era and IMO kind of a comparable kit. Certainly the smaller Revell Constitution is a great kit- I've built a number of them. it's not a quick or easy kit and the rigging could be very time consuming depending on how far one wants to take it.

I just mentioned the La Flore in the context of Lindberg. I have not built their little Constitution, nor would I choose to based on what I see on line. It looks like a 22 gun frigate with one gun geck.

OK, found this on the Lindberg (ex Life Like, ex Pyro) " 1/450 " USS Constitution...

Guess I'll return the JRoger to HobbyLobby and snag the smaller Revell Connie...
