Sorry, hard to say, because your question is hard to understand. Maybe some clarification? Pictures would be best. Good luck with that boat and have a nice day

Green color would be MTB green and White Ensign carries that color. As for the grey hull I'm not even sure if the real deal even had a grey lower hull or if any PT boat had a grey hull at most they would be red or black.

If you search this forum for "PT-109" or "PT Boat" you will find a number of discussion threads covering the color schemes of these boats as well as a lot of information on how to detail this kit.

Senior Chief,

PT-109, as far as I can ascertain; was either overall Navy Green or  Tropical Green (but I would lean toward Navy Green) over a Copperoyd bottom.

I'm told that the rudders were Monel and were like a gray-metallic in color.

One could use the WHITE ENSIGN MODELS PE fret to detail it.  If I were you, I would replace the kit's .50-cals ... Like from AEROCLUB to augment the WHITE ENSIGN MODELS PE details for the mounts for the .50s ...

Bodinga,

The paint job on the model in the photo is bogus.  Take a look here at a well-researched model of 109:  http://www.ptboats.org/cgi-local/sitenetbbs/netboardr.cgi?fid=102&cid=101&tid=1847&sc=20&pg=1&x=0

The ELCO parts manual indicates the rudders were manganese bronze.  If left unpainted, they would have looked rather like weathered brass.  If you do a google search for manganese bronze, you will find a number of photos of items made from this alloy and get an idea of the actual color.

The propeller shafts were MONEL, which is similar in appearance to stainless steel.

Google "Elco PT Boat PT-617" for photos of the preserved boat @ Battleship Cove museum in Fall River, MA.  The museum is made up of the battleship USS Massachusetts (BB-59), destroyer USS Joseph P. Kennedy (DD-850), Submarine USS Lionfish (SS-298), Elco PT-617, Higgins PT-796, & Soviet/E.German missile corvette "Hiddensee"  There is also a landing craft, as well as the bow of the cruiser USS Fall River on display there.  The Elco boat might not be exactly the same scheme worn by PT-109 but the colors are there to see.  I've been to the museum on many occasions and plan to build my "109" soon using detail photos I've taken.

I've been told by two men who know a heck of a lot more about PTs than I that the rudders were MONEL and that they had a grayish-metallic color ...

The ELCO factory drawings concur with the parts manual - all ELCO rudders (70', 77', 80') were manganese bronze.

Higgins rudders had a1/8" ,MONEL shell over a framework, this also taken from factory drawings.

And, two gentlemen have told me that the rudders WERE a grayish color - not bronze and that they were not painted to match the bottom color of copperoyd and were left in their "natural" color - which as I was told - were, in fact, a grayish-metallic color ...

I remember this because there was a few weeks' worth of "debate" between me, my modeler and the two gentlemen over what color to paint the rudders on my Italeri kit ... I thought that they should have been bronzed or painted to match the copperoyd ... it was shown to me via photos that they were in "natural metal" state, ... and if they were bronze?  It'd looked almost like the copperoyd.

Greetings Bodinga,

Thanks to Al for posting the link to my PT-109 model.  Bodinga, my guess is that you probably don't want to go all out like I did on mine.  If you're planning on building the boat as the 109 and out of the box I would recommend White Ensign Models 5-NG (Navy Green) for upper surfaces and US Navy Anti-Fouling Red for the bottom.  The strange thing is I can't find 5-NG at White Ensign Models web site anymore.  So you may want to email them and ask.  If these paints are not available to you try and find something close and you should be fine.

I do not recommend either the MTB Green or the Tropical Green colors.  They are not close to the color of the 109.

If I can be of further help please let me know and I'll be happy to help you.  I hope you enjoy building your model as much as I did mine.

Warship Hobbies is listing Navy Green as "in stock."  I have ordered from them; they are reliable.

Mr. Ross,

If you would not mind, please contact me at my AOL email address, ... I'd like to ask you more about this off-site, thank you.

David, the 109 was Navy Green, this was conveyed to me in letters; hand written letters in the early 1980s by the then four surviving members of the 109's last crew.  Since you relied on Mr. Kersey's recollections for advice, I don't think you would have an issue with that information coming from members of the boat's crew.

Mr. Ross, I'll await your email... thank you.

Greetings checkmateking02,

Thanks for the reference.  I was not familiar with Warship Hobbies.  It's always nice to have a good reference for White Ensign Models Colourcoats paints.  I especially like that they have shot photos of the lids of each color.  I'll give them a try.

In the colorized version of the movie, "They Were Expendables", they drydocked one of the boats, and the lower hull is in hull red.

PT boats' bottoms were painted with an anti-fouling paint known as Copperoyd, which, as I am told, was more of a muddy red than an actual red.

Then wouldn't Tamiya Hull red work as it looks like a muddy brownish red.

I don't know Tamiya Hull Red ...

But, I'd recommend using WHITE ENSIGN MODELS' Norfolk 65-A Anti-fouling Red, sir.   It is my opinion that it is an excellent match to Copperoyd ...

But, that's just my opinion, you can take it for what it's worth, and that's ain't much.

Tamiya XF-9 Hull Red is probably the closest you can get with Acrylic.  As Garth mentioned, White Ensign Models Anit Fouling Red is the best choice for oil based paints.
