Oriol and Bordino question
Posted by sumter III on Thursday, June 9, 2011 8:36 PM

I have the 1/350 Oriol and Bordino kits, both look like the funnels are the same height and width, but some drawings show they were slightly different.   Can anyone tell me what the correct dimensions are for this scale?

If you have the kits that come with one, those are close to Borodino. Actually both models are closest to Borodino.

Borodino also had a unique double stacked cap.

I used 7/16" dia. brass tubing on Borodino, because I think the staggered plates engraved on the stacks are awful.

Here's a link to a thread that will keep you up for a while.

The funnels in the kits are too short for either ship and are really better replaced with tubing.  From Kronma's post you can find the width of the funnels.

Borodino's funnels were 13 ft 1+15/16 inch wide and Orel's funnels were 14 ft wide.  I thought Borodino's funnels were slimmer than Orel and the others, but I had no proof.  Thankfully  Kronma supplied it.  I haven't worked out the correct height of the funnels, but Borodino's were shorter than Orel's.

There are many differences between these ships that are not reflected in the kit though.

Thank you for the link, and thank you Bondoman for the fine model you built.  My work computer will not allow me to view some of the pictures on that site.  I hope to have a new home computer soon, as my hard drive crashed and I lost everything.

Can you answere one more question; I think  the height of the forward funnel vs aft funnel was also different, if I remember the aft was slightly higher is this correct and was this true for both ships?

Thanks

Well, the answer is yes and no.  Both funnels stop at the same height above the waterline, but on the plans the forward funnel starts above the forward bridge deck.  So it appears shorter than the aft one, which starts lower down above a deckhouse on the spardeck. .

In the kit, the forward funnel passes through the forward bridge deck and sits on top of a spar deck deckhouse.  The aft funnel sits on top of a spar deck deckhouse  the same height as the one the fore funnel sits on.  So both funnels are the same height in the kit.
